Inevitable just happened: Toyota Introduced today Corolla Hatch Hybrid in New Zealand - 4.1L/100km

They are also targeting Business Owners offering Lease options.

For business with a lot of travel it is awesome - savings on gas would be substantial!

For private low daily commute the difference in $12K over the normal Corolla Hatch is hard to justify with the existing gas prices

Ex-lease after 3 years will be extremely popular and perhaps more affordable (around $20K I guess) and my Hybrid Battery Rebuild Business has just got another inspiration to exist and grow into the future!

North Shore Toyota have had one on demo for about two weeks now.
Quite impressed. Although the $40K+ price tag may be an impediment. At last they have released a hybrid vehicle here that isn't totally fugly.

They announced it today on Facebook with the link leading to the page with the 38K pricetag. I expect that to drop in about a year.

Corolla Hybrid Sedan has been released in Japan.

The best thing is that majority of models use the same standard battery modules - NP2 from EV Energy (Panasonic) making them much easier to replace and sourse form other models.

That is very smart decision from the manufacturing and further support point of view.

So since you are 'in the business', how much does it cost to replace the batteries in a 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid?

That's not a completely intolerable price.

It's more than our 2.5L Mazda cost with medium trim, but the Mazda uses 8.5L/100km (our actual average not official figures) so twice the fuel bill.

But they have underspec'd the hybrid model - no leather, no sat nav ....

No Leather or Nav in the Corolla Hybrid, which is kind of strange where the top Petrol (Levin SR) does, and costs $2K less.

Easy to justify if one understands CO2 emissions are greatly reduced.

At some point each of us has to look beyond the immediate "my money, now" aspect and think about the bigger picture.

You buy less petrol AND greatly reduce your emissions. That would have cash value if we had a carbon tax built into petrol pricing. Just one more way this government is a major #FAIL.

You just reminded me to mention this:

Both EVs and Hybrids (in EV mode) - such a good feeling of a fresh air when pulling out of the driveway and not backing into the exhaust fumes and similarly driving inside the ground floor garage without inhaling all those fumes... You can also park backwards in the garage if the need be which is a no-go with the ICE car for the safety reason...

Making ICE vehicles more expensive to run doesn't necessarily stimulate conversion to an EV.

EVs cost more and finance/deprecation is the biggest cash-outflow of vehicle ownership. Fuel tax by comparison is a second order cost for most drivers.

You would have to increase petrol taxes to an economically ruinous extent (doubling or tripling pump price) to make a difference to behaviour.

Liquid Fossil Fuels in NZ have been liable under the Emissions Trading Scheme since 2010, ( granted there is a $25/unit cap and a 2:1 (due to end in 2018) - but the European carbon market price has not been higher than that since 2010 anyway)

So to say there is no carbon price on fuel in NZ is incorrect, whether the price is high enough is another matter....

That pricing ($38,490 +ORC) seems very high compared to the other Toyota hybrids. Basically the same as the base Camry hybrid, and roughly 10K more than the Prius C.

It is spouse to be the best handling corolla though (it is the only one with independent rear suspension)

Neither. Just looking at the lifetime cost of ownership. We don't change or cars often. If it costs 8-10k to replace batteries, then that is something that has to be considered.

In this country when demand is high, prices become astronomical. I am guessing if they don't sell a lot of new, the used will retain some decent value. Whatever price the imports command, NZ New tends to be much higher

Corolla is an expensive model, not sure why, the Aurion can be gotten for cheaper
