A boat has been parked next to the intersection for more than a week now, it's half on the street and half on the sidewalk, blocking view of vehicles coming from the right.

This is also in two school zones, which poses risk for children walking to school because they can not see turning vehicles.

The police refers me to the council but Auckland City council said this is unenforceable because the trailer is not displaying license plate.

Does anyone have similar situations? With school holiday coming to an end I am a bit concerned about the safety of the kids.

Is it on a trailer? Do you have a tow bar? Have you asked the people in the nearest houses?

It is on a trailer, I do not have a tow bar and TBH I would not try to tow a boat even if I did.

I think the owner went on holiday there is no one currently living in that house.

Wow, next time I want to park illegally I guess I'll just remove my licence plates!  (Sounds ridiculous...)

Removing it yourself is probably illegal.

So an unregistered vehicle is parked on the street and the Council says they can't do anything? Sounds like rubbish to me. Try parking in town and taking your plates off so you don't get a ticket.

Hang a "Free to a good home" sign on the side of it.

My understanding is a vehicle is illegal if it is in a public space (roadway):

  • is not displaying number plates
  • is not displaying a current registration
  • does not have a current WOF

If it has no plates its most likely been stolen and dumped.

Looks like Auckland transport handle this:

https://at.govt.nz/driving-parking/parking-rules/abandoned-vehicles/

Get on the phone to them and tell them its a hazzard and if they fob you off tell them you have 7 sharp, Story and Fair Go next on your list to call.

Just to clarify

THERE IS NO VEHICLE attached to the trailer.

The trailer which the boat is on does not display any rego.

I think trailers are considered to be vehicles, and should be registered, etc.

Do Auckland Transport only throw their weight around when they feel like it?

Their website has the advice

"If you want a vehicle towed, call (09) 355 3553.

If you believe a vehicle is illegally parked"

Even if the owner has abandoned the trailer AT should get it moved.

@zyo - Trailers must still be Registered, have a Current WOF and display a Number plate.

Have you tried Auckland Transport - not the Council?

Yes, when I say Council, I meant Auckland Transport because the call is automatically redirected to them.

See this from the Herald in August

Personally I'm surprised it hasn't been stolen as I've been looking at bringing a boat to Auckland and my biggest fear is it being stolen.

Yep not the first time

Bit of a catch 22 - the only solution that I can see is to move it to completely block the road, then call AT. I'd imagine then they would tow it, as it's more than 'just' a parking offence (yes I know most parking rules are there for safety)

If you park any vehicle illegally without plates it should be an automatic tow with recovery fees payable by the owner, and if not claimed and paid within x months, the vehicle should be sold to cover any costs.

It's illegal to park a trailer on the road for more than a week without using it (I've been ticketed for this).

Also illegal to park on the berm (even if seemingly sensible to do so).

If you ring the council they will either tow it (if it's illegally parked) or put an 'abandoned vehicle' notice on it, which says they can tow it after xx days.

Generally councils won't take any action until someone complains.
