As the subject heading says I have a 1997 Toyoace with a 3L 2.7 diesel in it.  It hasn't been started in around 4 years so I'm replacing the fuel filter, an oil change plus draining the tank and adding new fuel.

I read somewhere that it's a good idea to pre lubricate the cylinders before starting so I've removed the glow plugs and was going to squirt some fogging oil down the glow plug holes but I'm not sure if this will do any good as maybe the glow plugs are in another small chamber connected to the main cylinder?

Any diesel mechanics out there tell me if it's worthwhile trying to get oil (via the glowplugs) into the cylinders?

Thanks

Not a mechanic, however, if squirting oil into the combustion chamber of a diesel, I wouldn't be putting the glow plugs back in before turning the engine over to expel the oil. I'd expect the oil to be non compressible, sealing it back up and running the engine may result in bent conrods etc depending on the volume of oil added.

put a little oil in the cylinders and turn it over by hand a little to get it lubed up.

Try and get some oil pressure in it before starting it too.

then put the plugs in and start it.

Make sure its out side as it may smoke a bit.

Thanks.

I was going to crank the motor for a few seconds (with the starter motor) while the glow plugs are still out to distribute the oil in the cylinders - I guess this won't hurt...., hopefully!

shouldnt. i would start by hand if you can though, give it a few rotations with the gloplugs out. then with the starter, then crank it up.

Hi I'm Lee I'm a automotive machinist and read your post and confirm the same as what your doing I.e adding some oil then cranking before refitting glow plugs will be fine the fuel in tank should be fine still but watch for any leaking around injection pump they can start leaking after sitting so long
