My daughter's Nissan Dualis/Qashquai has a socket in the centre glove box, together with a cable.  The socket/plug appear to be of 8 pins arranged in 2 blocks of 4, and the other end of the cable looks very much like for an iPhone.

Anyone know what its for, and what the actual connection is called?

      >like this?<

That look like the socket for sure.

A little looking around seems to indicate that it is an iPod/iPhone connector which can then be controlled on the steering wheel?

Thanks.

...

looks like an old style proprietary cellphone or PDA type data (and charging) connector from around the year 2000-2005.
