I've recently bought a Toyota Wish 2009. It's an import so of course all of the stereo buttons and touch screen controls are Japanese and it's been one hell of an exploration trying to figure things out!

Yesterday, by chance and pushing a bunch of random buttons I achieved a bluetooth pairing with my iPhone, and discovered that it does in fact work to make and receive calls.

Now what I'd really like to do is stream music from iPhone through that same bluetooth connection, but at present that's not happening. The bluetooth only works during calls.

Is there a setting on phone and/or stereo that would allow music streaming?

Does anyone here know Japanese, or have experience with the stereo in a Wish.

If this is better suited to an audio forum, admins feel free to move it.

This isn't an answer to your question, but more the general issue you've faced re knowing what buttons do - have you tried Google Translate? I tried this on a friends' new car (also a Toyota with a complex set-up), and it was surprisingly useful. Would have solved all my problems dealing with the same thing a few years back!

Presume it's a toyota headset? Then there should be a source button, from which you would need to select bluetooth (that's how the NZ toyotas bluetooth streaming works).

Thanks for the tip on google translate. Will have to give that a try.

The stereo does have input controls, but I believe that I cannot select Bluetooth as an input. It's disabled even when my phone is paired with it. Seems like there might be another step required to activate that options but I can't read the screen enough at all to figure it out. But it must be possible somehow because there is a Bluetooth input option if I can find out how to enable it.

Also about 3? layers (profiles) of bluetooth the device needs to support. One of my old headunits only did hands free. GAVDP vs AVDTP vs HFP vs A2DP.

If it was designed for handsfree the media playback version may be missing.

Yeah my 2010 A4 only has a voice profile for bluetooth, so it's likely it doesn't do it. You may have to go for an aftermarket integration or possibly replace head unit.

Thanks for all replies. Due to the age of the vehicle I suspect it won't support more than hands-free calling. But at least it has AUX input so no problem it's just more cords.

My car was the same... hands-free calling but no music streaming via BT.

Rather than cords, and because the AUX input is in the glovebox (Ford Mondeo... what *were* they thinking?), I have a BT-FM converter which includes a couple of USB charging outlets. It's not as Hifi as a wired connection, but a lot more convenient. Especially with a wireless charger plugged into one of the USB outlets, and a 3D-printed phone dock.

I use the Automate app to recognise that I'm in my car by the fact that the BT connection is live, so music starts playing automatically from my phone.

I've tried FM transmitters and always hated them. But I have the luxury of an AUX port right there on the stereo screen so very easy access for much better sound.

There are, and I'm sure I just saw the likes of 1day or pb tech in an email flyer, bluetooth to 3.5mm devices. So you BT to the device and it outputs via the 3.5mm to the car.

Yeah. However, in my case, the cig lighter is between the seats and the AUX is in the glovebox... a BT-AUX device would also require a cord from cig lighter into the glovebox.

I agree that FM transmitters aren't Hifi, but there's no point to Hifi when you're driving, except maybe in a Rolls Royce? And my ears aren't that good anyway.

Ahh pity, mine had a ipod connection so I was able to add a bluetooth to 30pin ipod connector, which has the advantage of supplying power.
