I, for one, welcome this news.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/88941619/energy-minister-judith-collins-vows-to-get-to-the-bottom-of-rising-petrol-margins

2 examples of the vast difference in price, from the same retailer, in 2 different port towns\cities

  1. Paid $1.689 a litre for 91 at BP Connect in Mt Maunganui.
  2. Paid $2.089 a litre for 91 at BP Connect in Johnsonville.

Both stations are owned by BP as I understand it, and fuel comes ashore in both Port of Tauranga and Seaview in Wellington, yet a 40c difference.

Talk about being shafted...

Yeah it's pretty annoying, even just heading over to Paraparaumu from Wellington changes the price a good 15c.

From what I've been reading, the petrol companies are milking Wellington to make up for the price wars happening elsewhere.

The reason the prices are so high in Wellywood is because of all the rich politicians and public servants. money-mouth

I live in Wellington and the price drives me nuts. Strangely there is a 6 cents difference between stations in Petone and Central Lower Hutt. Two Z stations, 800m apart completely different prices. Don't get be started on the price differential between Wellington and Masterton.

Agreed. On the trip up, I made sure I had enough petrol to get to Levin, and filled up there, just to save money. Paid $1.739 from memory

I frequently see differences of 20c or more across town in Auckland. I think it's a nationwide issue TBH as I saw the same thing in Rotorua recently too.

Also, for once I agree with some of the comments on a stuff article lol - It's ironic (in an alanis morrisettesqe sort of way) that the AA is calling on petrol companies to explain, when said companies (I'm particularly looking at you Caltex) actively use AA rewards as an obfuscation technique when overpricing...

Whangaparaoa stations charge extra as well, soon as you turn off the highway the petrol sky rockets. Z have always said "Whangaparaoa is off the beaten track" - whatever, Ive seen other towns "off the beaten track" that have still had it hell of a lot cheaper, and not exploding in population like Whangaparaoa is.

south auckland i find about 30 cents cheaper than the central suburbs.

i often see 1.50-60 a litre for 91 (good day, petrol prices go up and down like mad) and drive past a petrol station i ellerslie for $1.97ish.

I just wish they all advertised their premium prices....

I wondered if rent and wages were higher, but that wouldn't account for the difference. I assume it's greed and perhaps collusion between companies, because there's no monopoly.

BP Fanshawe St this morning - 91 was $2.08.9. 95 2.15.9 and 98 2.23.9 Diesel $1.38.9

I fill there quite frequently (but using a fuel card, so pretty sure work doesn't pay the pump prices).

+1000.  Yeah, I find the same thing but don't like driving too far to get petrol lol. An completely agree about the premium advertising! Especially by Caltex and BP who seem to really ream premium users...

(If you're looking for something cheaper that's centralish, try the recently opened Waitomo station on Manukau road - it seems a fair bit cheaper than anything else that central... though still a bit more than south auckland I think)

You guys are lucky, There is pretty much no price competition in Christchurch that I've found apart from npd in Hornby which has diesel 18c cheaper.

Just visited Chch for the first time and was shocked by the uniform (and uniformly terrible) petrol prices.

As someone from the south island, uniform petrol prices is bad enough, but we don't even get any ethanol blended petrol either, not even in Christchurch.

And long may that continue.  We get enough water in petrol already.
