Since there are a few Mazda owners on this forum, I thought some of you may be interested in the fact that Mazda has finally committed to offering Carplay on new vehicles and is also proposing a solution that would allow existing vehicles with the MZD system to be retrofitted.

http://www.caradvice.com.au/532338/mazda-planning-rollout-of-apple-carplay-and-android-auto/

At this stage the cost, timing and process for retrofitting seems to be unclear but I am personally quite excited about this because I find the MZD system a bit slow and clunky compared with the user experience of an iPhone.

So when you go and buy your new Mazda you also have to go and buy an expensive iPhone??

"Mazda’s US arm has confirmed it will add Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility to its line-up"

the first sentence in the article.

So, you'll be fine if you're using an android phone....

I ended up installing a Sony headunit in mine that supported Apple Carplay (and Android Auto)

Good luck installing a 3rd party headunit in a new mazda, or most new cars for that matter.

Mine is the previous generation mazda (2012 axela), head unit not all that hard to remove.

Current generation would be a different story

I'd be interested in this (2015 Mazda 3) if the cost is nominal. But I'm not holding my breath on that one.

I'd be keen too.

My only issue would be that I'm android and my partner is iPhone, so I assume we would have to choose either or?

I'm happy with the MZD except the destination setting in the GPS it can be very labourious to enter the street you are looking for and  the disclaimer pop up

One feature I like about MZD is it can pair with two phones concurrently.

As I have the base model without navigation, adding Android Auto for maps is the only reason I could see to have the upgrade

Hopefully it is rolled out while my car is still under warranty (end of September) .. I might be dreaming

I was speaking to Mazda's Marketing Services Manager about Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support at the end of last year, and she said there weren't any plans for NZ models at the moment.

As of late last year Toyota and Mazda were the only major manufacturers holding out on the deployment of Carplay, and Mazda were hinting that they were considering it whileToyota were firm that they preferred a proprietary solution. Toyota's position hasn't changed, but yesterday's announcement is a major turnaround for Mazda.

I doubt it will be covered under warranty. For those who can get a software-only upgrade it will probably be covered as part of the free servicing package since flashing the entertainment system is part of the standard servicing checklist, but if your vehicle is more than three years old or requires a hardware addition then you'll be paying for it.

I've got a recent CX-5 and would be interested to see an upgrade to support Android Auto especially for Maps. The Maps system built into the car is basic at best,

Just a comment that Mazda do add improvements to MZD at service.

For example after our last service, the reversing camera now overlays caution triangles when the rear-cross detector is triggered.

Whoops, meant to say servicing ...

Which ends in September ..
