So I just bought a new car, an import, and there is a funny box in the glovebox.  It seems to be connected to the microphone that is located at the top of the windscreen.  However the car has its own Bluetooth phone connection.  Any ideas?

This also speaks to me when I start the car (in Japanese).

It's some kind of toll bridge system, I gather.  Can be removed.

That makes sense!  Maybe its the car speaking to me, not this device.

Probably more likely to be an antenna than a microphone.

Unless it's built by Google.

Yeah, that's a good point.  It just kinda looked like a mic from a Bluetooth phone kit, hence my assumption.

(Note - I haven't YET seen any Google logos......)

I was looking at japanese cars three weeks ago and also noticed many cars that had those installed.

On one of them had the words "Electronic tolling" or something like that so @ubergeeknz is right.

They talk to you if there is no toll card in it when you turn the car on.

Yup, automatic tool both payment system.

When I took one out of my old car I used the remnants of its wiring loom to hook up another 12v socket in the glovebox which came in handy a few times.

When it is speaking to you it's telling you that you have not inserted your toll rd payment card which is automatically debited as you drive through the toll gate the aerial sends your cards details which include owners name, address, rego/wof and insurance details then it debits the credit from your account... should any of those details not be upto date you'll have 1 of 2 things happen

1: By the time you get to the end of the toll portion of the road there will be a cop waiting for you to give you a fine

2: or failing 1 you'll receive a fine in the mail if no cop is available at the time
