I am not a Twitter person but these two tweets appeared earlier today:

Update dog that was on the airfield at AKL_Airport has now been caught
7:30 AM - 17 Mar 2017

Unfortunately an Aviation Security dog was shot this morn @AKL_Airport staff had tried for 3 hours to catch it our thoughts are with handler
8:35 AM - 17 Mar 2017

It looks to be a major screw up, or an 'alternative fact', to say that the dog had been caught, as posted at 7.30 am.

An hour later the true version appeared.     I would not want to be person responsible for the 7.30 tweet.    Even Sean Spicer would not try that one!

I wonder if they knew it was their dog.

Do you mean, did Aviation Security know that the dog that escaped from their van and ran through their checkpoint, was an aviation security dog? I think they probably did.
The protocols for animals loose on an airfield are pretty straight forward and the staff at AKL international went above and beyond in their attempts to retrieve the situation. I'm sure if there was any other way it would have been exercised. On the flip side, if the Roaming animal had caused an incident involving injury or death, the would be questions asked about why they didn't just shoot it.

As an aside, I am sure that that particular dog's career with AvSec was over the minute he escaped on to the airfield.

Is that the best they could do in 3 hours. Have they never heard of tranquilizers?

Apart from anything else that dog was worth a lot of money because of it's training ($20k-$60k).

Guess they tried everything first including trying to lure the dog to them with food.

His behaviour would indicate that the training wasn't worth much. Isn't getting your dog to come on command Dog 101?

according to a vet that wasnt an option , you have to get really close to the animal to make sure it works. It's like when people say , after some is shot and killed by the police, why didnt they just shoot him in the leg . Not an option in real life.

They have policies in place for exactly these situations.

A much easier scenario to understand is - tiger escapes from the zoo enclosure -> 100% shoot to kill ; ask any questions later.

The dog at airport -> shoot to kill is last resort. (I'm told)

Something like this would save them the negative publicity (which made front pages in the UK even).

I haven't paid much attention to this story as its such a non issue for me, but its hard to avoid hearing all these armchair experts and people screeching the dog should have been tranquillised etc. What makes 99.9% of these people remotely qualified to make any sort of judgement on the situation other than "omg don't shoot dogs!".

I think I heard that Sue Bradford and John Minto are planning a protest about it.......

But in all seriousness, you simply cannot apply any hindsight thoughts to a situation that is evolving like that, shoot the dog or risk havoc with large tin cans full of people, the right decision was made under the circumstances.

Same thing that makes most people qualified to comment on 99.99999999% of what happens ion the world, about which they know little or anything.

Doesn't mean that they are not entitled to the view that the dog (which did nothing wrong and which escaped almost certainly due to human error since most dogs cannot open locked doors) has more right to life than the airport has to make money, for example.

Given the number of animals working at the airport as well as the number of animals travelling through the airport, I'm surprised that (actually that's a lie - I am not surprised, sadly) no one had properly planned for the eventuality with adequate trained staff, possible non-lethal alternatives available on site and so on.
