Just wondering if anybody knows any free parking spots that gets me closest to Auckland City? I know it's a long shot, but even if it means parking in a nearby suburb and bussing the last KM or two there.. I'm from West Auckland and sometimes would just rather not catch the bus that goes through Te Atatu and Lincoln Rd just to get to my bus stop in Massey.

Thanks in advance.

Depends how long you need it for. There's a lot of free P120 stuff in and around Wellington Street, Ponsonby, otherwise all around Crummer Road, Williamson Avenue, is generally all free and unlimited; pretty much the western side of Ponsonby Road onwards.

What's your point?
There is a train from West Auckland to the city.

And the motorway from West Auckland, if you
take the Port exit puts you down on quay street
And tamaki drive.

This map shows you the On Street parking with restrictions in the CBD;

https://at.govt.nz/media/imported/5277/ccpz-map.pdf

While that is in itself worthless, it starts to give you an idea of how far you will need to start going for parking. Basically, Freemans Bay to the West, Parnell to the East. Eden Terrace to the South. Each of these areas does have areas allocated for Resident Parking, so you may find that you can't park there either. You will also need to get up before the Sparrow has completed it's daily to get one.

As much as I dislike Auckland's Public transport solution, it may be better to drive to a Park and Ride and get either an Express Bus or the Train, dependent on where in the CBD you work.

Another option is to drive to City Fringe and cycle the balance. There has been some big investment into that side of things.

I live out in the Waitaks, so same west auckland problem (worse infact considering i do not have a "local" stop for public transport).

Parking in town is simply expensive, there is no arguing that.

however it becomes a question of time.

Train into town, there is about 10$ a day round trip.

Parking in town, depending on where you park 10~20$ (assuming earlybird, it just gets stupid if not..) plus a bit on fuel - Helps to avoid peak times if possible.

Now the train takes a good hour each way, plus walking time to the office.

Parking in town is maybe a 20 min drive without traffic.

That becomes a question of, what do you value more? the cost of parking or travel time.

Working projects of late, i have been valuing travel time due to working some odd hours. Normally i'd use travel time as a chance to wake up and be onpoint for the day.

Parking prices ofcourse if you organized an arrangement, could be far more covenant and cheaper. Does depend on where though (Don't ask tournament parking, they change more than paying the daily fee with the CC charge!)

There are some spots you can get free parking but often it is

a, Highly desired, always taken.

b, Time limited.

c, So far out of the way, it may not really be 'feasible'

There's only one Massey by Te Atatu and Lincoln Road out West. :-)

Albany doesn't have a Massey suburb, only Massey University. That was always kinda confusing for me too back in the days!

The other Massey I can think of is Massey Road in like South Auckland, but that's not out West and don't think that's a suburb.

If I must drive, I usually park on Alten Road at the Wilson carpark. It's $15.50 inc transaction fee for 12 hours on their app ParkMate, but recently I've been parking slightly further at the Wilson parking behind the Caltex station near Alten Road for $11.50 inc fees. There's no lights there so it does get pretty dark walking by yourself back to that car park (right next to train lines) at night especially with winter coming.

The closest train would be at Henderson or Swanson for me but I'd rather not take the chance of getting my car broken into after 8-10 hours of being away from it.

By the way I am just trying to get to the University of Auckland so it's not central central Auckland. :-)

Massey to Gt North exit > then side street park anywhere between there and Karangahape Rd > get bus anywhere there to city. That's easy every time.

Else > off at Newton rd and left to Gt North for the above or go right then right to Dominion Rd and sidestreets. I'm less certain about that one, but it's worth a look.

Edit: For uni you want the close to Karangahape Rd as you can get option. Works every time.

When I pass through bond street from new north road city bound, there are normally spaces on the downhill section to the bridge even at times up to 8.30am.  5 min walk to Kingsland station from there and train in to city; or walk to other side and on to GNR and catch the buses in.
