Hi, new to these forums. Looking for advice/common issues & experience with Nissan march model

Have had my car for a few years, fairly cheap to service and maintain. Bought it for <$5k, mileage is <160k.

One day it randomly broke down in traffic, took it to an AA service centre and they couldnt find any fault. A week later the same thing happened so took it to Nissan dealership/service and they replaced the crank angle sensor/shaft. Dr Google suggested fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator as common problems; queried this with the Nissan mechanic and they ran checks ~ fuel pressure checked out fine

Few days later (today) it's lost the plot again ugh broke down couple 100m from my house..taking it back to the mechanic this arvo. Frustrated and just want to get it sorted so I can trade it in asap

Any ideas? Thanks

Trade it in anyway. Dealers are not usually concerned much about those issues and can solve them anyway. Ask the dealer to make it worth your while to make it a done deal.

Check the battery terminals are clean and tight. As loose battery terminals are a common cause of random cutouts.

Did the Nissan dealer confirm that the crank angle sensor was faulty? Or are they just replacing random parts and hoping it fixes the problem?

The drivers is the common issue with these cars

When you say it broke down can you give more details, did it just cut out or did it start to misfire and stop? When you try to restart does the engine crank or not? if it cranks does it fire then stop of not fire at all? Are there any warning lights coming on?

We had faulty electric power steering on K12 couple years ago. Replacement on used one cost us about $700. Apart from that no problems. Having this car for about 5 years already.

They confirmed that the sensor was faulty and that it is a common issue with the model but it seems as if they've also taken a stab in the dark. Initially, i asked them to look at the fuel pressure regulator (internet mentioned this is often overlooked) but I don't think they did.

It was fine on the highway doing 100km with zero traffic but when I drove through town/breaked or stopped in traffic that's when it stuttered and stalled; all warning lights appeared. I was able to restart the car and drive several yards but again the warning lights appeared and it stalled then died completely. The funny thing is, it started the next evening and we were able to drive it to the mechanics

I noticed that it shat itself when the weather was a bit warmer/hot so maybe it's a temperature thing ?

Sorry I'm not explaining it too well, partner sorts our cars and I have zero clue about this car stuff

Probably unrelated but it is a documented issue on the K12 models that the tail light bulb connections can become corroded or intermittant which can cause occosional random beeping & possible ? false warnings on the dash. Not aware that this could cause the car to stop but for a few minutes to remove the bulbs / connectors & refit again certainly is worth a try.

The description seems more like an airflow sensor issue. I don't know much about it, it comes up a lot in Google search. March is called Micra in many markets.

If you take it back to Nissan will they sort it for free?

Imo just trade it in. This kind of issue does not phase an experienced dealer one bit usually. On a trade in you are unlikely to lose more than the cost of the repair.

If it is a sensor, there will be a code logged in the internal computer of the car. The Nissan dealer would have connected the car up to a scan tool that would have read out the codes.
Sometimes dealers or garages will simply clear the code and see if it re-appears (to ensure it is not a false positive, and maybe save the customer some money replacing the sensor)

 

If it was me, i would find someone with a portable OBD2 scanner and read out the codes that appear when the issue occurs.

 

Heat can cause all sorts of strange things to start happening. When i get a bit of heat soak into the starter motor on my Holden Commodore, I find it can be slow to crank. I am yet to pull the starter and clean the brushes in it to see if that helps.

When my Maxima had an intermittent fault like this it turned out to be a broken wire in the loom from the ECU. I was lucky that the foreman at Jim Wright Nissan in Hamilton had seen it before, zeroed in and repaired without too much trouble. The fault had reported as a throttle body problem previously.
Might pay to give the loom a bit of a wiggle.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. It's going to the garage today. We are going to look at cars to buy this weekend & sell the March separately once it's fixed. Hesitant to sell it until it runs fine for a couple weeks, not fair to potential buyers otherwise.
