Some mysterious "Onzo" bikes have turned up in the CBD.

No announcement, no press releases, no fanfare. Barely even a website from what I can find; they do appear to have a Facebook page along with an app for you to use the bikes. Fee is $0.25/15m, and you get $10 bonus for signing up. But yeah, quite mysterious as to where they've come from.

Just to clarify for anyone that read it as I did. The $0.25/15m above is 15minutes, not metres. For a minute there I thought it was more expensive than a taxi.

A bit like watches that are waterproofed for up to 10 metres - most people can swim further or longer than that.

So they are one gear non-electric bikes. Not really ideal for Auckland (unless you need to get from K-Road to the ferry building in a hurry).

I see them ending up with a whole heap of bikes downtown, and none up the hill anywhere.

Also, they have just opened a bureaucratic can-o-worms with Auckland Transport - they just plonked those bikes there without any permits or anything - surely to be running a business from Public land/Bike stands, you have to at least cross some council T's and dot some i's.

Good luck to them though - cheap enough. I think Electric bikes may be a better idea (or at least something with gears and a more adjustable seat).

Someone posted about this on a Chinese startup news site last month. https://36kr.com/p/5092287.html

If you use Google Translate, you get broken English but it's still mostly understandable. "A round of 20 million yuan financing"; roughly translates to 4.3 million NZ dollars, from "with China Unicom, Ali cloud". Apparently they also want to expand to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch with 3000 "New Zealand standard" bicycles and eventually become a "lifestyle-sharing platform".

What's more interesting is the section about advertising. "Specifically, in terms of advertising rental, OnzO will be online advertising content advertising implantation, through large data analysis can be accurate delivery". I wonder what this section means, especially the 'large data analysis'.

I'm sure AT will be quite curious come Friday...

Sounds a bit like a Ofo brand rip-off. These guys are in 180 cities already.

Usually these companies run re-balancing vans.

Checkout more on Ofo, very interesting story how they have started and continue building business.

It's a bit like Uber where you have to establish an office in each city. Not so easy to scale when you thing about it.
