I'm sure it was probably written somewhere on the form but I didn't spot it.  When you apply to renew your licence at the AA you have to hand in your old licence when you get the paper temporary licence.

I just renewed mine and didn't realise this until my temporary licence had been issued by which point it was too late.

The person at the AA didn't tell me until it was too late.   She did of course have time to try and persuade me to join the AA.

If I had realised, I would have deferred as I need photo ID later today and I'm pretty sure I don't have another form with me.   yell

Why renew it?

Eventually the police will help you out, apparently.

Why not just report it as lost? Nothing to hand back in that case :P

The temp license is supposed to be valid ID until you get the replacement photo ID.

It's only a temporary drivers licence - and even then ... according to Avis I will also need to bring along PhotoID when I pick up a rental car on Wednesday.

It's more or less useless as ID because it doesn't have a photo.

For example: I'm going to a function tonight at which I have to show my Invitation and PhotoID to gain entry.

Or if I looked under 25 I couldn't use it to buy booze.

Well you might be surprised, I was told 2 weeks for my replacement license to show up, ended up being about 2 days.

I have always wondered why they need to take the old one off you, for this very reason, as it causes inconvenience for no benefit. I told them I had lost my lifetime drivers license, but found it, so still have my old lifetime one even though now invalid due to legislation.

last time I renewed I told them that i am declining to give them possession of the old licence as I needed it for photo id (even thought it's invalid as a drivers licence).

They couldn't quote the relevant legislation or show me where it was required in law to give it up so I retained possession of it

Just tell them you've misplaced it. Petty bureaucracy and arbitrary 'rules' for the sake of nothing needs curtailing.

It reduces the chance of identity theft, and misuse of additionals to purchase age restricted goods.

Yet when you renew your passport online, you are not required to send in the old one. Sure you can't use the old one for travel anymore. But if the expiry date doesn't say that it has expired, how would anyone know if you use it as ID for buying boose, opening a bank account etc.

Does the Dept of Internal Affairs provide some sort of API to non Government companies etc to see if a passport is still valid? Does NZTA do anything similar for drivers licences?

Kind of hard to do that when you've just handed it over laughing

Unless someone in the AA is engaged in identity theft ...

Poor effort on behalf of the particular person you dealt with. Have a read through s30 Land Transport Act 1998. Subsections 1 and 4A are the parts most relevant to you.
