Is there anything that can be done about a speeding ticket?

Got a ticket that said I was over the limit on x road at 2.30pm some time 2 weeks ago.

1) I don't travel on that road ever because the only reason I'm ever in this area is for work / physio but I travel from the other direction and both those places are before this street where the cam is.

2) Every week on this day/time I am at my physio appointment - it is close to that street (but again, still before that street), and I was already at my appointment and stuck there for 2 hrs at the time I was supposedly ticketed.

FWIW Speeding is very out of character for me - never been a rule-breaker and people always tail me because I'm traveling at the limit which is why I'm hesitant to pay and 'admit fault' but I don't really see who else could be to blame since only I drive my car. I did request an image *still waiting on it* so I guess if there's nothing that can be done, I'll just pay it.

Request a copy of the photo - should be a way of doing this outlined in the fine you received.

Check the image and then decide. I recall thinking I wasn't at fault once but looking at the image changed my mind & I paid up.

If you are at fault just be grateful you don't live in Australia - camera fines start at $200 for less than 10km over the limit.

Red light cameras cost $400.

Can't explain the time difference but are you sure it couldn't have been a mobile camera?

You've done the right thing by asking for the image.

Mobile unit = The manual ones officers hold?

I'd have to check the notice again - would it tell me or just something I should have noticed while driving around?

I've traveled this same route (to work/physio) for the past 3 yrs and have never been ticketed so I would have thought I would notice another camera around. I didn't see any police cars on the day either but maybe he was hiding.

Guess I'll just keep on waiting for the image - it's been 2 days not counting the long weekend -_-

not a police unit, a camera van, they're mobile and not sign written.  If you've not seen one before you may have missed it

...and the fine doubles if you don't pay up in 30 days. 58kph in a 50 zone in Adelaide costs about $500 after Avis takes 2 months to forward a speeding ticket to you.

there was a thread on here years about about someone getting pinged for driving in a bus lane for more than 50m after an intersection, they were adamant they didnt do it. requested the photo, and what do you know they did it, and paid up.

i wouldnt be surprised if the ticket was somewhere you did drive, and they/you may have got the details wrong somehow.

I got off one years ago...but it was the wrong car, in another city.  The driver sent it on to someone with the same name and I popped up.

Just make sure you ask for the photo before you say it wasn't you, or else they wont send it.  Since i was able to prove I was in Wellington and not wherever this was (auckland I think), they wouldn't let me see the photo because of privacy.

Given it's a street you do actually drive on and at a reasonable time (ie not the middle of the night if you're normally a day time driver) , it's pretty likely you.  But the photo should confirm/deny that.

Years ago, someone on a forum posted that they had been ping by a mobile speed camera for speeding along the motorway at 115km.  They were pretty impressed because their car had no engine or transmission at the time.

They requested the photo wondering if someone had swiped his plates - but no, it was his car. On the back of a tow truck. For some reason the camera system determined his plate was the offending one :)

That's rubbish. You're being accused - you're entitled to disclosure. In the very early days they used to try and charge money for photos (I consider this was to discourage people disputing them) but actually couldn't as you're legally entitled to review all evidence they're going to use against you and they can't charge you for that.

this is the thread i mentioned

Looks like that was back when it was covered by local bylaws too - before being unified in the national Regulations.

Put new tyres on your car recently? As larger diameter tyres will make your Speedo read less compared to your actual speed.

When I bought my van, a previous owner put the wrong size tyres on it. Speedo read 100K, my actual speed was 110K. Good thing I bought a GPS navigation unit at the same time. So I quickly discovered the error.

Have since put the correct size tyres on it.
