Hi frens,

I am looking to import a Japanese van. Turns out most of imports nowadays have to have ESC - great, I love this technology (friend showed it to me in action on a gravel road, the benefits are undoubtable).

Problem is most of Japanese sites doesn't really list it as a feature. Is there any particular models (10-15 yo) that you know or can recommend?

p.s. Also thinking of getting it while I am travelling there. From what I read it's going to be quite hard - one needs to obtain parking permit which can take weeks - more than I am here. I do wonder how much of that is really enforced - cams? Won't start without a chip card? Fines when loading car onto ship?

My understanding- All imports must have ESC unless you are importing it under the special interest vehicle category.

And please don't import anything that is a forward control type van. As they are deathtraps in a head on crash.

Unless you know what you are doing this is fraught with issues.

All vehicles brought into NZ must now meet frontal impact standards and have ESC, along with a raft of other requirements.  There are exceptions.

Research, research, research.....or find a reputable agent to do it for you.

Later model 'people movers' imports seem to be around so there must be models that meet requirements.  Can't say I have seen the old banger tradie van as a jap import.  You don't say what it's to be used for.
