For the past 3 months I have been getting mail from Auckland Transport addressed to some unknown(to me) woman. At first I wrote 'Not at this address - return to sender' on the envelope and put it in a mailbox.

The letters kept coming so I phoned AT to see if I could get someone to stop stop sending the mail. Apparently that's not possible and the CSR I was talking too advised me to just throw the mail away. That sounds wrong and is probably illegal.

A couple more came so I opened one, and as I suspected, they're for an unpaid parking ticket.

Using google, etc I found out where the woman works (people don't realise how much personal info they leak via Facebook) so I forwarded the the letters to her work address.

And still AT keeps sending the letters.

I guess its not really a big deal. AT are spending a couple of dollars a month to send the letters and why should they worry about that. After all, we now have a regional fuel tax that is covering the cost.

Its just the principle of the thing!!! People run computers, not the other way around, so they should be able to stop cluttering my mailbox with this junk.

Any suggestions as to what I could do to stop this nonsense?

Ummm...

Ok, ignoring that you opened someone else's mail then doxed them..  I suspect you need to ring AT again and ask to speak to a supervisor if the CSR won't help you?

Apart from hounding AT and sending the letters back I don't think there's a lot you can do. Be careful not to fall afoul of s19 Postal Services Act 1998 as mindless bureaucrats like prosecuting people. Maybe give Fair Go a ring and see if they can sort out why CSR's can't put a stop to this.

Yep, not a smart thing to be admitting to on a public forum.

All bureaucracies are mindless. Process and procedure becomes more important than outcome.

It does seem crazy, but presumably your address is what her car is registered to, and they are duty bound to send infringement notices to the registered owner/address of a vehicle. It will only stop if you get in touch with her and get her to go to the post shop and change her address with NZTA.

The AT letter will stop in a few month time and will be replaced with debt collector letter - wish people would update their details

Some people have no desire for people like AT to know where they live....

^^This

Stationary vehicle notices, speed camera tickets, and red light camera tickets must be sent to the registered owner at the address they provide on the motor vehicle register.  That's why it's important when you sell a vehicle to not hand over the keys until the buyer shows evidence that they have changed the registered owner details, and to advise new details when you move.  I think that can all be done on-line now.  It's not just AT, but any enforcement agency.

Since the owner of the vehicle can assign any address they like on the registration, can it go the other way - the address owner go change the address used to a different one ? Or will they be asked for ID of car ownership to do this ? If it can be done, Id be changing the address of the vehicle owner to their local Police, or work place.
