Hello everybody,

I just moved to Auckland and did some research but very unsuccessful. My job will be in Wiri roughly from 8-4:30. It looks like that the traffic is totally crazy for those hours. My questions are the following:

1. Best time to travel? - if they allow me to change working hours

2. What is the best area to live considering that I have some courses to attend in Auckland city at evenings? Like two-three times a week?
I was thinking Onehunga but then I don't have any benefits, nor in the morning nor in the evenings.
So is it better to live maybe close to the workplace even if the residential areas are not lively? Budget is restricted to 180$/week

3. I need to have a car as it is impossible with public transport, it will take me ages! Any suggestions for alternative routes? All googlemaps streets look even worse as there are a lot of traffic lights.

1. all depends on where you are going to be staying, some roads get busier than others

2. getting to the city in the evenings (after about 630pm) is straight forward, most of the traffic has gone by then and travel times are low.

my question was also for advice where could be some good area to stay considering travel time, work etc

the problem is that I have to be in the city around 5:30 in order to find a parking space. So any suggestion please of basically on alternative routes AND/OR place to stay. For example Mangere East is a nice area? At least I will be close to work but if the suburb sucks..then it is not worth

Where will you study? Looks like driving from wiri to puhinui station or another convenient station and getting the train to the city for the course. Cheaper than parking at $8 per hour or more after traffic for an hour.

1. if you end up living local to work i.e surrounding suburbs I’d say between 7am-7.30am at first to get the feel of general traffic flow in and around Wiri. As for studying after work... you’re going to want to leave work at 4pm at the very latest, it can easily take you 20-30min to get to the nearest train station just with traffic being traffic.

2. Your best bet is to find a place close to work and even better close to public transport like a train station.
It’s roughly a 45min trip from Manukau into britomart by train. As for budget being $180, is that for accommodation? Because you’ll be flatting on that amount. Local train stations to your work, Homai, Wiri (skip Wiri), Manukau, Puhinui, Papatoetoe and Middlemore. Start looking st accomodation in those areas.

3. A car is not going to be any good to you for getting into town before 5.30pm unless you bail from work couple hours earlier. Factor in the price of petrol and parking in town 2-3 times a week, you’re better off using the train. Alternate routes pro tip: what ever your thinking of trying in terms of shortcut routes etc.. forget it as everybody is has and will try that same way. Welcome to the rat race where getting from A to B is the daily struggle.

I haven’t lived in Auckland for 2 years but it’s still the same if not worse.. probably worse.

I worked in Wiri until yesterday. I took a room in a family house in Papatoetoe and it was 7-10 minutes to work regardless of time. I am moving out in a couple of days and would reccommend this place. Secure gate and parking, mature couple owners plus flatmates. Message me if you want details. Train station close so train is best option for city by 5:30pm but not if you finish at 5pm. Have to leave a little earlier. Papatoetoe is fine to live in.

Edit:

Rent $220 per week all up. Includes room, power, gas, internet, water. You only supply food and toiletries.

Driving is not your best option given those requirements

I would suggest the train is the best way to get around mostly on time.

You can do Manukau to the city in under an hour on the train and it is pretty consistent.

I'm in Karaka and work in Wiri, @ 6:30~7am it takes 25 mins and 15 mins of that is driving the 3 kms from Papakura on-ramp to Takanini on-ramp... in 3 to 6 mths time this will reduce as they sort out the Takanini bottleneck

Train only comes into Manukau so depending on where you are in Wiri public transport could be a fail, maybe training from Manukau to City on required days and driving from Manukau to home would be workable option

Papakura/Takanini should offer plenty of choice at your pricepoint and at a reasonable level of living

Hello,

thank you so much for ALL YOUR REPLIES! I will try out different accommodation but definitely not living in the South as there is no life :)

At the end I will look for a shared place in Onehunga or Mount Eden or Roskill (adding a bit extra money), I will try both driving work, coming back home and then riding the bicycle to the city. the week after I will try train+bicycle.

I read that they don't allow bicycle on peak hours though...so I will have to buy a foldable one. wtf.

Will found out only once I have tried.

Any other suggestions welcome ;)
