We were at a BBQ yesterday in Wellington when an enormous grey plane flew overhead. A bunch of us checked FlightRadar but no sign of what it was (and in fact no sign of anything in the air near Wellington at all, even the following AirNZ flight)

Turns out it was a  bunch of US security officials in town:

Weird how they seemed to have control on FlightRadar?!

Most military aircraft (and plenty of private aircraft) don't appear on FR24 or FlightAware. You can simply apply to have this hidden.

Of course if you have a FR24 or FA receiver you will still have access to the raw data if you're within range.

Some do, some don't. Generally speaking even military planes prefer not to be accidentally run into by a stray Cessna.

You'd think a Lear jet would be more discrete.

The visit is probably serving a double purpose as the US is trying to sell the RNZAF Globemasters to replace the C130s

Good thinking! Maybe they'll let a couple of our pilots take it on a test flight somewhere? tongue-out

As long as it's a low level flight over the Hutt Valley smile

The USAF C17's going to Antarctica from CHC are not tracked either.  Nothing is shown at all.

Couple of private trackers are doing basic MLAT to see them.

As Sbiddle says, $20 usb stick can get you altitude and decoded/searched rego details

This sucker however, yep. Secret squirrel stuff. To the point of putting up the curtains.. https://www.flickr.com/photos/111emergency/44324391700/in/pool-c17innz/

The Globemaster is a little big for NZ! The US are pushing the new C130 as a replacement for the C130!

Did it have three engines? We saw a HUGE grey plane that looked like it had three engines approach Wellington airport from the north on Sunday late afternoon.

Saw it on the tarmac this morning on our flight to Chch - the flight attendant thought it was one of the Antarctic ones.
