After a couple of recent significant deaths in the family, I'm deciding to adopt YOLO in the most positive way possible. I'm not going to live forever and if I'm going to do silly things then ideally I should do them while I'm able to enjoy it...

Travel isn't really my thing and I love my job - so disappearing off-grid and travelling the world for a year isn't a goer...

I don't have kids or a partner, but I love my cats and I love cars... There's only so much you can spend on cats before people start looking at you sideways, so that leaves cars.

I have a fun track car and a fun CRX but neither are at all suitable for a daily... My current daily is a very sensible, pretty fast Skyline SUV.

So with YOLO in mind, I'm looking for something that will make me grin every time I get in it, even if it's just to go to the supermarket... I'm not generally a fan of V8s and I generally prefer small cars.

Looking for inspiration... At the moment I have 3 cars on my shortlist

- Fiat 500 Abarth (Test driving one today - but I have rented one before for a week in Italy)

- Nissan 370Z

- R35 GTR

The R35 is probably at the top of my budget and if I was going to spend anything like that it would need to be on a car that won't depreciate too much more.

Anyone got anything to add to the list? Gotta be fun, gotta be reasonably fast, should NOT be viewed by most people as a sensible daily driver.

Cheers - N

Toyota 86's are a bit of fun if you decide to throw it around, as are MX5s.

Personally GTR is on my list but Ive been a Skyline fan for many years ;) (yet never owned one)

For giggles, could get a Suzuki Cappuccino and drop a few dollars in it to turbo it :)

I have rented a GT86 before and to be fair, it was an Auto, but I could tell there was nothing there in terms of go... Also it was bizarrely hard to get in and out of.

Something like a Cappucino is a good idea - since posting I also remembered that these exist..

Edit. Tried to link a picture. I am sick and tired of how hard that is getting. Honda S660.

Cheers - N

Are you prepared to modify something? You might struggle to get what you want from factory. A Nissan VZR is a great car from the 'parts bin' era with loads of stuff which will bolt right in for cheap. Could go 2 litre VE with big cams or DET...

I was going to say a Honda S2000 as well especially seeing you mentioned the S600. Prices are only going up on high revving NA cars it seems. Obviously not as quick as an R35, I haven't driven a 370Z but drove a 350Z a lot, a bit lacking in soul, plenty quick, but seemed to run out of revs.

I'd like a nice NZ New S2000 in black. With aftermarket hardtop.

And if you have a CRX then it's keeping it in the family!!

I'd be keen on one of these. It was also sold as a Lotus. I've only ever seen one in New Zealand.

The turbo version was the I think the fastest production car in the world when it was in production.

Some of you have pretty entertaining ideas about what a daily driver could be... I already have a Lotus 7 replica which is road legal, but my no stretch would I consider it daily drivable - same feeling for an Atom or Morgan :-) The S2000 is a good thought, and I should have mentioned I'd considered and rejected an Elise - so a VX220 is excluded as it's essentially the same car.

I drove a lovely 2011 500 Abarth today and it was great fun... Great condition, incredible price and the right spec - but the moment I got back in my luxobarge after the test drive I had the horrible sinking feeling that I wouldn't end up dailying it... Maybe I need to look more at luxury instead of sport... Not a nice realisation to come to - but I don't think I can deny it.

The Toyota 86 was also rebadged as the Subaru BRZ. And the BRZ was also available turbocharged.

Otherwise a +1 to the R35 GTR.

And there is always the Tesla Model S, with ludicrous mode of course. Since the Tesla is an EV, the low running costs will mean that you won't worry about using it as a daily driver.

I don't think the BRZ was ever available with a factory Turbo. Subaru have in fact explicitly said there are no plans for it. That's a shame really.

A Model S is well outside my budget, especially with the options, 2 motors and a good battery.

The R35 is a car I have always wanted, but I wonder if it would be a total waste using it on the road...

I'm almost thinking that in order to be a daily driver it's got to have a level of sensibility involved - not not be completely sensible - something perhaps like an E63 AMG estate of an Infiniti FX50S...

An M5 just about fits into the same category as an R35 - makes sense in some parts of the world but would never use more than 25% of it's capability here.

Maybe I need to embrace the boring factor of a daily and make a more concerted effort to use weekend cars :-)

Dont know what your budget is, or how soon you want it, but think outside the box.....  do something noones done before ;) Like shoe-horn a RB26 into a original Mini Cooper ;) Wouldnt have much space left for anything except the driver.... but you get the idea :)
