Long story short, I went over a driveway curb and didn't expect a drop on the other side. Wheel went down and scraped about a foot of the underside frame behind the wheel.

Good news is that I got the car out without damaging anything else except the metal outer frame of the car and the plastic edge. Not much to do with the plastic but the metal part is skimmed clean of paint and is shiny exposed metal. It's not visible unless you go looking for it but I don't want to let it rust.

My thinking was to clean it up and apply a coating of something, paint or anti-corrosion stuff. Just not sure what to get. Was going to pop down to super cheap auto or repco and ask for paint but thought to post here for advice.

I'd have it checked out. There might be structural damage. Cars are just pressed tin cans nowdays, they're really easy to bend.
Structural damage may not be an issue till you have a crash.

Let your insurance handle it. Doing a halfassed repair will just rust and then the car is up for expensive repairs later on, whereas insurance will guarentee their repairs for a long time and get it done properly with real prep and paints at a panelbeater.

Hence why I'm asking for advice on not doing a halfass job. Looking at sanding down the rough edge, cleaning it, etch primer then paint on top with clear coat after.

Maybe I was overstating the damage, it's a mm deep but foot long scratch in the paint. The car didn't drop on anything, it scratched over concrete.

Hard to get under for a good shot but here's the damage.

Edit: on second thought I should clean it and make sure it's metal and not fibreglass or something else.

Doesn't look very "metal". What make and model car is it? Do you have a magnet?

If it is metal, spray with fish oil and apply some "subframe black" along the edge with a brush (or any paint really). Fish oil will stop rust.

So it is ferrous, took a fridge magnet and it stuck. A friend lent me a zinc anti corrosion spray for bare metal and told me clean and sand the rough edges.

Smooth it over and touch it up, that's nothing serious at all
