I'm looking for comprehensive car insurance, $500 excess.
* reliable car, agreed value $11,500
* age over 50 year old
* garaged at night
* about 5,000 KM / year commute
* had one minor ticket in ten year
* no other driver
* no claim bonus
* no rental coverage

I'm been using AA insurance for many years, and every year I talk to them and try to get a cheaper rate.

I'm paying $464 / year, which seems expensive.

Is there an easy way to shop around, or anyone recommend an insurer?

I'm with AMI

$400 excess.
* reliable car, agreed value $26,000
* age 28 year old
* garaged at night
* about 9,000 KM / year commute
* no offenses
* no other driver
* no claim bonus of 60%
* no rental coverage

$83.80 x 12 = $1005.6 yearly

$464 sounds like a pretty sharp price to me already.

I doubt you'll find a better quote than what you're already paying to be honest.

Sounds pretty sharp to me!

Last few times I have shopped around and AA came in either cheapest or equal cheapest and - perhaps more importantly - making a claim through them was a fairly painless experience.

Beware the "super cheap" options as they are often only good value until you need to actually use them...

I must say thats a very good price, having been through a similar exercise and stuck with AA

I did try Tower, The Bank my mortgage and insurance is with, AMI and also FMG ( they didnt offer anything  as I was not in their alley)

That price is probably better than you'll manage to find elsewhere, perhaps give them a call, and see if they can sharpen their price a little? If so, I wouldn't imagine it being a lot, however.

For comparison, I've got my car valued at $31k insured with my bank, who holds our mortgage & home and contents insurance, excess at $400, for just over $780 per year. On the flip side, if you've ever tried getting reasonable motorcycle insurance, good luck there! I'm paying $620 per year for a new bike valued at $7k!

I'm a bit biased in this situation...because I work for a new online insurance provider called Cove (in fact we have a thread in the Startup forum where we got heaps of feedback from the Geekzone community late last year)

My details for comparison:

  • $29.16 per month / Approx $349 per year
  • Cheap because I drive an older Toyota Vitz, worth about $5,000
  • No previous claims or infringements
  • Based in a North Shore postcode
  • Used 6 - 7 days per week to commute
  • I can't recall if I have any optional extras 😄

There is no real easy way to compare all quotes in New Zealand, like there is in Australia, UK, or US. However getting an online quote only takes a few minutes so you can compare 2 or 3 quite quickly to get a ballpark figure.

you didnt mention the city and that does make a difference

classic cover or swan might be an option for low km cars
