Couple of questions...

1. The 2018 Kia Sorento shape has been out for a while now. Anyone have any idea when it will be refreshed (and presumably make the current version a bit cheaper)

2. Buying new, the Dealer new actual price list (not the inflated RRP they always state) seems to be as follows;

EX $49,990 + ORC

Limted $51,990 + ORC

Premium $ 59,990 +ORC

I loath the thought of having to go through the negotiating rigmarole with these clowns. Has anyone bought one of these recently and can let on as to what the lowest possible price might be to pick up one of these? I'm probably not able to afford the Premium but any info at all would be welcome. I just want to hit them with the bottom price and say take it or leave it (am I even being realistic here?)

Thanks!

Two questions first; do you have a trade in, and do you intend to purchase any accessories? If so then it’s best to negotiate on the total package.

Thanks for that Alasta.

Yes I do have a car "to get rid of. It would only be approx $2000 value though so I guess that could be traded in could it?

Re Accessories - I'd need a towbar and some kind of fitted matt for the back to protect the interior. I had just thought of getting those done elsewhere to avoid the Dealers overinflated prices, but I see your point about negotiating on the whole package - maybe that could be better in this case.

To give you a rough guide, I bought a CX5 GSX (mid-spec) last month and got $1k off the vehicle, plus I inflated my trade-in value by about $3k. I got floor mats for no extra cost, but opted to buy a few other accessories. On road costs were $890.

So, $4k of concessions is not unreasonable and you may get more on a top spec vehicle because they tend to have higher margins. You have probably missed end of financial year deals but new car sales have started declining a bit so some dealers will be keen to get sales across the line.

"negotiating rigmarole with these clowns"...wow, great attitude.  Good luck with that approach.

Given their prices are discounted and include free service plans at the moment your best bet is to try the package deal approach IMO with extra's.  Given when we were looking (Just purchased a Sportage last week) there was anything up to a 2 month wait depending on what model you wanted, they simply can't get enough of them in the country fast enough, it's possibly you who may have to take it or leave it.

Best of luck with your decision.

Awesome Alasta! Thats just what I was after. Thanks again.

scuwp - thats a really good point also about the existing deal - and yeah I know my approach is rubbish, but I really really dislike the silly dance you have to weave to just buy a car. I just want to know the price and pay it. If I could order online, add/remove extras as I please and have it paid for and ready to pick up without having to talk to those sneaky salesmen, I'd be super happy.

Although it depends on how much time you want to spend, IMO keep your trade-in and new car buy transactions separate, and this was the advice I got from a youtube vid . IMO I would sell my old car on the side of the road (I have used trademe in the past but never as successful as selling by the road). Although check with your council as to where you can do this. I live on the main road so the car was outside my house. But depends on if you want to be bothered with that, and if the car isn't worth much then it may not be worth it.

In terms of negotiation on price, check what other dealers are selling them for online, as some  online prices on trademe can be very sharp. Also if you go to field days, they can sometimes give good discounts. At one they were giving 20% off a new  toyota RAV 4, and it was a very good deal.

Here are a couple of vids that may help you dealing with car dealers, which may help you be on a more even footing.

Cross-shop another brand, similar vehicle. Dealers negotiate more to keep you in the brand if they see you are buying on price rather than on a specific brand model.

If you want to make some money, you need to do some work; the right attitude goes a long way.

It looks like the 2019 versions of the same model are coming in to the yards now and a few dealers still seem to have a few 2018 models kicking around, so maybe some bargaining power there?

There won't be a lot of negotiation with their special prices.

I tried it when we bought our Sportage, and they wouldn't/couldn't move much.

We didn't pay ORC, as we bought a demo (so was already registered, and it had 5000k of RUC). They did low ball on my trade-in and I got that increased by a couple of thousand (i maybe could have sold it - a Mazda Axela MPS - for $1500-$2000 more but I did not want to hold on to two cars).

There was no pressure from the salesman, I thought he was great (I can give you his name if you are shopping at Auckland Central Kia). We were happy with the deal we got, and have been happy with the after-sales service too.

I think they are advertising the EX Sorento Diesel for $48990+ORC with 3 years servicing at the moment. Maybe negotiate on the ORCs and rear floor mats? I think thats a good price for a good car.

Our salesman told us to get the towbar done privately - he said they just use Best Bars and would charge it out at about $1500 for the Sportage. I got it done at NST for about $700.

I would highly recommend cx-5 or cx-9 , you can easily negotiate and make it work.

CX-5 not in the same class (only 5 seater). CX-9 would be a good car, but a lot more money - they start at $10k more (base model).

Those are hardly new cars. The one with just under 10,000k is OK, but still not new.

I got a brand new CX-9 Limited for $51K (including trade in @ $3K) The new 2019 stock was arriving, so wasn't hard to get down to that price.
