Well nice to see Waitomo has opened a station on the Old Hutt Road, about 1km from the self-service Caltex.

Opening special ws $1.85/L for regular which Caltex matched.

There was the usual long queue of cars of course at both stations but what I found interesting was once Waitomo ended their special and fuel went upto $2.07 (I think that was the day the Government added their 4c additional fuel tax) Caltex kept their price at $1.85 for one more day. Good for me since I managed to fill up both cars that wet evening :-)

The Waitomo near me in Auckland is usually the cheapest within 5km or so - I tend to give them my business even when they're not because I don't need a loyalty card to get the "real" price.

Yes, great that there is finally some competition in the Wellington area. I was a little bit disappointed that they opened so early in the month. Their previous releases said that they would be opening mid July, so, the Sunday before they opened I had filled up expecting that to carry me over until their opening.

I too used the Caltex store to avoid the queue during the opening discount period but in future I will be using Waitomo. The other main retailers were happy to massively overcharge compared to other areas while there was no competition. I won't be forgetting that soon.

The big difference between the Caltex and the Waitomo station is that the Waitomo station does not have any cover for you so if it's raining you're going to get wet. I did notice the Caltex station does not have NFC payment so you have to push your card in and out. Does the Waitomo station have Paywave for payment? That would tip the scales for me.

When that Caltex site first opened it used to have the cheapest petrol in the region for many years as it was not a manned site. 6cpl off was a huge discount when supermarket vouchers only offered 4c.

In recent years it's been one of the most expensive sites in the Wellington region for petrol when you'd look at Gaspy.

So far it only appears that the Caltex are matching Waitomo, the nearest Z and BP have not moved...

(Z appear to be using use Caltex and Challenge as discount brands to blunt the impact of Gull/Waitomo etc, )

So with Caltex do you still get your normal 6c off the discounted price with the Smartfuel/AA card?

The 4c Tax increase came in on Monday 1st July.

The BP & Z in Johnsonville both adjusted there prices accordingly to $2.209, up from the $2.169 on Sunday.

While Waitomo and Caltex price matched each other, there was little to no movement in Johnsonville.

Both BP & Z Johnsonville are now $2.169 against Waitomo's $2.079.

Interestingly, the week Waitomo have launched here, I've had no BP emails re the 10c off days they've been doing. In the past these days have usually been Wednesday, and Friday\Saturday.

If they resume this, then on the 'special' days BP would be just cheaper than Waitomo based on current prices.

And for those in Johnsonville, or that general area, the local Challenge closes on Friday, leaving only the BP, Z and Mobil in the suburb, for now.

Yeah I got caught out as I don't usually use Caltex with others being more convenient to home. There was a 10c AA Smartfuel day last week while the price at this one was 1.85 so went to take advantage of it without knowing not all Caltex stations do it. Still got the 1.85 of course so if wasn't all bad!

Yes I'm surprised that there has been no movement elsewhere except the Hutt Road Caltex. I was expecting there would be.

We don't do the hunt for 4c/l here or 6c/l there when needing to fill. We typically put 50L or less in per fortnight, a 4c/L saving is $2.00 or $0.14c per day. We fill at the most convenient outlet to where we are at the time we need to fuel. Driving extra distance and using extra fuel to get a $0.14c/day saving seems odd to us. Even a 20c/l saving amounts to $0.71 per day. I probably loose more than that out of my pocket or to my grand kids.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I normally gas up at X Jville or Mobile there. Z railway station is no good for me since they don't sell 95.

Having two stations right near me with low prices is great.

There is no need. 91 is only 216.9 at most sites nearby and with 6cpl instant discounts that means Waitomo are only 3cpl cheaper. People are not price sensitive enough to go out of their way just for that.

Waitomo are already on record as saying that they are working on a Johnsonville site next...

But I've not heard any details of what site they are looking at..
