The Hazard
On the affected vehicles a condenser may fail because of inadequate heat treatment in the airbag control unit. A condenser failure can lead to a sensor signal change. In most cases this sensor signal change is detected by the control unit and the airbag system is switches off. A switched-off airbag system is indicated by the airbag warning lamp in the instrument cluster, so that the driver of the vehicle is clearly informed of a fault in the airbag system. But it cannot be completely ruled out that the control unit may interpret the sensor signal change as a crash-like signal (incorrect front crash detection), which can result in the airbag(s) and/or belt tensioner(s) being triggered incorrectly.
