Can't speak for the Outlander, but I have a Thule twin bike rack and its gets very close to the back of my VW Golf. I found I had to buy bike bones to make sure the tyres didn't swing about and hit the back of my car. Hope that helps...

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation
You could also consider a roofrack and bike racks. We went that way, from a towbar mounted one, and it is great, much easier, no hassles with scratches, can always open the boot etc.

scuwp: You don't want it too far away as the weight on the towball with 4 bikes will be reaching the usual max towball loading. Unless you have a special towball fitted?
I have had a standard Torpedo 7 rack on my last 3 SUVs without any hassles.

I've got one of these - it's excellent.
We have 2 x 26", 1 x 27.5" and 1 x 24" mountain bikes onboard and have never had any hassles.

Bung: You are supposed to obtain a supplementary plate to hang on the end of the load. There doesn't seem to be any requirement to light it up. The speed camera has its own light 😉

Hmmm, while this is listed under "trailers and towing" it specifically mentions bike racks on towbar; though it's not really clear if the rego lamp bit also applies to bike rack on towbar...
Registration plate lamp
The letters and numbers on the trailer registration plate must be lit by a white light. It is important that the white light doesn't dazzle following drivers or confuse them about which way the trailer is facing.
Direction indicators
[...]
Note: If your load covers up essential lights on your vehicle or trailer, you must fit temporary lights to your load to make sure you comply with the legal requirements set out above. For example, bicycles carried on a towbar-mounted cycle rack on the back of your vehicle can often cover up your tail lights.

We use the exact same torpedo 7 bike rack on our Outlander.
A supplementary plate only costs something like $20. I put high strength key rings on the top corners of the extra plate and we just use a couple of extra cords and hang the plate between the arms of the bike rack.
If the bikes are put on properly the side brake lights and indicators can be seen straight through the bike wheels and the top brake light is visible over top as well.
Edit: Grammar

Thank you that’s a great suggestion will look at getting one specially for the first 2 bikes on the rack cheers
As someone who regularly transports several bikes on the back of a car, a bungee around all the front wheels munging them all together stops them banging just fine.

I am fully prepared to be schooled here, but what??
Max loading on our towball is 2,000kg. So in my mind, unless each bike weighed 500kg, aren't you going to be just fine?
(Ok, explain how dumb I am someone)
