A month ago I noticed that Google Maps had a new app icon. But today after this mornings latest update I noticed an even bigger and better change.

It now supports Apple CarPlay split screen, the maps are more defined with sharper routing colours and it supports dark mode for night driving. Haven't tested if there are any other new or different features.

The reason I noticed this this morning was when I plugged in my iPhone 7 I noticed a new icon on the Kia Sportage home screen which said Maps. This was never there before. When I touched this icon it brought up the Google Maps (which is my Default and not Apple maps) and then told me to give various permissions on my iPhone. Picked up my phone and there it was, front and centre, Settings > General > Google Maps request panel. It wanted permissions for; Location, Contacts, Microphone, Motion & Fitness, Siri. There are others in that Setting but that is all G/Maps asked for. It has never asked me that before.

So they have done a complete revision of their API. Can not, using Google search, anywhere find a breakdown of version history.

Would be helpful if members could list any new or different things they discover in this latest version of Google Maps and Apple CarPlay, and yes, Android Auto too.

Interesting! I thought this was going to have to wait for iOS 13.4, I don't suppose you're running a Beta of that?

New ways to get around with Google Maps on iOS.

Google in the next few weeks is about to release a big update to its CarPlay Dashboard.

In the CarPlay Dashboard you can now switch or pause songs from your favorite media app, rewind or fast forward podcasts or audiobooks, or quickly check calendar appointments without ever leaving turn-by-turn navigation in Google Maps. The information is displayed in a split screen view so you can get the information you need while keeping your focus on the road.

I for one am looking forward to it. Contrary to my original Topic release above, the split screen facility did not really work all that well like Apple Maps does. Plus Apple CarPlay wanted to keep defaulting to its own Maps app. I prefer Google Maps. The main reason being is I can plan a route & destination on my iMac and send it to my phone a lot for efficiently than Apple Maps.

This is going to be important for us in November as we are going over to the west coast via Awakino, down the coast, brief stop over at Tongaparutu where for 50 years we had our family Bach and I spent every 2nd weekend before boarding school and all my school holidays at, then onto New Plymouth for the Taranaki for the Garden Festival with a group of family and continue down the coast via the relatives family farm at Rahutu, to Waverly where other family members had the Clarendon Hotel for 20 odd years or so. On to Bushy Park Sanctuary at Kaliwa. Then into Wanganui via more family and a now non existent boarding school of mine. Then via Ohakea airbase where I served for most of my airforce career and onto Wellington my birth place and the family seat. Then up into the Wairarapa via two more boarding schools, onto Taupo for more family and back to Tauranga.

So the much improved, I hope, Google maps on CarPlay will be a great help as we both have not been to some of these areas for 30 to 50 years and I used to know Wellington backwards but haven't been there since 1981 and we know it has all changed.
