Hi guys.

I'm new to the UTE world (got mine just before lockdown) and was hoping you guys could share a good place to get UTE accessories? I want something like this to store things quickly in a road trip and at the same time protect it against dust and rain.

Do you know where I can get a similar item in New Zealand? or maybe Australia? Amazon.com is too expensive :)

Cheers!

Kogan have this for $60 & delivery:

https://www.kogan.com/nz/buy/komodo-waterproof-roof-top-cargo-bag/

Can't see why that couldn't be used in a ute tray. It's about 14 cubic feet (vs 26 for the one you linked) but maybe 2 of those would be more convenient than one larger bag.

Thanks! It'd definitely fit... the problem would be to tie it, tho. But I guess that's a good deal.

Frankly, if you have a wellside ute (a ute where the tray has wheel arches in it, typical matches the cab color), you would be well served with ponying up for some kind of tray cover. Your choices are as follows:

  • Canopy
  • Hard lid
  • Tonneau cover (soft tray cover)

Each have their various pro's and con's, but all will keep your gear dry, and stop lightweight items from blowing away. First two are lockable, and second two will keep your stuff out of sight...

It seems to me that 80%+ of wellside utes I see driving around in NZ are fitted with one of the above. I would strongly recommend you get one unless you have a specific purpose that requires the tray to be open (I.e to load dirt bikes in, or for construction gear that gets dropped in with a crane, or farming use).

Note that Utes generally don't have a dust seal for the tray door, so stuff in the tray will get dusty if you spend a lot of time on gravel roads.
