So recently I've been trying to find a cheaper and greener way to commute to and from work and considered everything from biking, to bus, to driving to the outskirts of the CBD and using a scooter to get in. But for various reasons one idea has stuck... I just don't know of anyone the that does it.

Basically, an electric moped (LA) class. I've never wanted to to own a nifty 50, between the noise and it just looking stupid (no offense meant to those that do it!)

But what about this thing?! electric chopper

Seems like the requirements on the NZTA website for an LA class aren't too stringent. Has anyone had any experience with something similar? I see are least one NZ company sells the non registerable version without the turn signals and mirrors etc

Very tempted to take a gamble on this but wanted to see if there's any people here that have imported a scooter or anything similar to this? Or have knowledge on what it requires to meet LA class.... And also they have a minimum order quantity of two 😂😅

Kiwi company ubco will sell you a road legal and registrable electric “motor” bike , that you ride with a car license , it’ll cost you 8k, but it’s not very moped-ish

I think it's awesome they've developed that and I'm sure it's much more reliable than anything from China... But 8k? Nope!

Been looking at electric moped also. The Niu Scooter has been recommended by a friend.

I bought one of these (see the link) in June this year, and have been using it for commuting between Mount Eden

and the CBD-

https://www.woottons.co.nz/product/electric-motor-scooter-lifan-std/

It has enough knee space for me at 1.85-metres height, keeps up with 50-kmph traffic, and has about a 50-km battery

range at that speed. I think $168 annual license ('rego'), no wof needed, and for me $30 full cover insurance per month.

It replaced an electric bicycle I used for the previous eight years. So far I am glad I spent the $3000 on the Lifan.
