i've been quoted 700 for the fob, 100 for key, 150 to program, + GST, a keyless car key for a Subaru ...

does anyone know of a cheaper way to buy these things?

Thanks

Was this from a Subaru dealer, locksmith, or auto electrician?

Suggest you try a few of your local auto electricians and locksmiths. They can often supply aftermarket keys for a fraction of the dealer prices.

We had the same issue with my wife's Legacy, was going to cost us approx $1100 to get a new fob/key including coding etc in NZ. We ended up going back to Stadium Cars where we bought the car and they imported a fob/key from Japan. From memory it cost about $450ish for the fob/key and we just had to take it Subaru to have the key cut and coded. Still not cheap though.

If you already have a working key, plenty of options for aftermarket keys are available. Local locksmith or even Mr Minute at your local mall are some options.

Insurance? We had our car insurance pay out in a new one for one of our previous cars after losing one

I purchased a transponder key from eBay a couple of years ago for my Legacy, it was listed as Forester key but looks identical to my original.   I misplaced it because other things got in the way and just recently found it.  So I also need to find someone to program it to the vehicle based in Auckland.

I'm pretty sure Mr Minute cannot code keyless "smart keys" and you would have to have a very capable "local locksmith" with some expensive equipment (and knowledge of how to use it) in order to do what the OP is asking.
