Am wondering if anyone has any recommendations on avoiding sunburn on cars i.e. avoiding ending up with a mat paint finish. I had a Google and found some advice from the AA, seems like using wax (for protection) instead of polish (for actual shine) is good, separate from just washing/cleaning. Does that mean these wash and wash products are ok, or is separate best ? Any products people swear by (or swear at) ?

Twice a year I wash, claybar and carnauba wax the cars.

Outside of that, general washing is a "wash and wax" formula.  Usually Mothers.  If I have been traveling and required bug/tar removal, have found detailing sprays work well to add some protection back to the surface.

Polish is abrasive compound that removes old wax & dull paint (less abrasive than cutting compound).   Wax protects, a bit like temporary clearcoat.

Thanks for the info. I'll see if I can get that stuff in the local Repco or Supercheap.

Having really good results with Turtle Wax Hybrid Solutions range. Using the Polish and Wax, Wash and Wax, and Ceramic Spray Coating.

Just need to follow the instructions and not use too much. Also the Wash does not foam as much as some other products - this is by design, but it leaves a great coating on the paintwork.

Both Repco and Supercheap carry these, so just check both websites and buy when on special.

Thanks for that as well. Are ceramic coatings really a diy thing though ?

Also I guess whatever I use I should apply a proper coating of wax or ceramic separately as well as washing, not just rely on the wax n' wash stuff by itself ?

Edit - I guess being allergic to elbow grease doesn't help...

The video answers those questions and the products are easy to use when you follow the directions. Just start with the wash & wax, but get some microfibre towels for drying.

A bit of elbow grease or deteriorating paint - pick one.

Here's what you can do without too much effort with a DA polisher and Meguiars Compound, Polish and Wax. Looks like brand new again. Well worth the effort.

The paint had got pretty bad as you can see. I hadn't been polishing/waxing it as often as I should. It's probably been close to 2 years since I gave it a polish/wax, plus red is absolutely the worst colour to look after. Unfortunately this car sits outside which doesn't help.

This is the original paint at 17 years old. I always wash it with something like Turtle Wash and Wax.

There is no substitute for regular washing using a good quality car wash and wax interspersed with a good polish and wax every 4 to six months. No need for a compound unless it really needs it. Otherwise keep it out of the sun as much as possible.

Impressive how thats come up as good as new. I just have to make myself clean and polish more often, especially as the car I'm asking about is going to live outside (not new, but looks quite decent). I just have to avoid the whole tomorrow, next week, next month thing...

Yep, that's the catch., you need to be disciplined.

It's worth investing in a DA polisher. I have one of these, https://www.supercheapauto.co.nz/p/rockwell-shopseries-rockwell-shopseries-180mm-multi-function-car-polisher/344537.html

One of these is probably as good, some people say a smaller head is better if your car is quite curvy. https://www.supercheapauto.co.nz/p/toolpro-toolpro-dual-action-polisher-240v-720w-150mm/581559.html
