My heart goes out to the families of the tragic loss of life the other night. 🤗

I do know how you are feeling and the grief that you are going though and anything I said here would seem hollow.

Now is not the time to be pointing fingers as I am sure that time will come.

None of the people in that car would have been out that night remotely thinking of what may transpire.

All taken far to soon 😥

And yet they want to do burnouts and rip up the roads in their honour. Darwinism at its finest.

plus a criminal record as he already has admitted it was his fault on social media.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

The father of one of the kids, said his kid had never done anything like that, or shown inclination to get into a car where that behaviour might have been common. As the father of two kids who are pretty sensible and rule abiding, it scares the living crap out of me, that one of them might make an out of character decision to get in a car with someone or god forbid, be the driver in something like this.

There is a lifetime of misery facing many people after this weekend.

I can't help but think the alcohol played a major part from goading to decision making to unhibited risk taking to reduced reflexes etc etc. All combined you have something pretty powerful.

Some friends of mine were involved in a serious crash (I wouldn't get in the car) in high school and there was no alcohol involved.

Just kids who were young dumb and full of....

It's clear that some kind of culture is well established. I'd prefer they decided to honour their friends by driving under 50kph for the whole day and night.

Possibly one day someone will realise that letting children drive without professional instruction isn't the wisest route to follow.

Also the cars that younger people drive may not be the safest, as 1st cars tend to be cheaper and older. When they really should be driving the safest cars. IMO the drivers licensee age in NZ is also too low.

This was a very sombre event and shows just how dangerous cars can be if not respected properly.

Both my children have their own cars, one has a full and thankfully, drives like a nanna, the other is on her learners but we are mixing our own practice / training with professional instruction. I did take the opportunity last night when the item was on the news to reinforce just how dangerous cars can be. Hopefully other parents are also showing their children the consequences of things going wrong....

I think an "older" first car these days is still safer than an older first car 20+ years ago (my first was a 16 year old Toyota, no abs brakes, no air bags etc etc with body work held together by the rust)

❗ENFORCEMENT - ENFORCEMENT ❗️

Again I will repeat want I posted in another Topic:

Still think we should have a similar licencing system as in Australia.

  1. Written driving test
  2. Yellow L Plate = 1 yr very restricted with minimum driving 120 hours log book
  3. Practical driving test (performed on our country roads not just town/city)
  4. Red P plate = 1 yr restricted with zero defaults
  5. Green P plate = 2 or 3 yr restricted with limited defaults
  6. Maybe an advanced driving test - skid pan & chicane etc
  7. Full licence
  8. Restrictions being; curfew, zero alcohol & drugs, speed limits, licence type, number & age of passengers.

I miss the P plate system from Australia, it gave me that "danger Will Robinson" heads up that I had an inexperienced driver near me.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Hell yea - My first car was a 1954 Morris Minor split screen, low headlights, 800cc flat head. Front seats were not bolted to enable tilt forward, I had to put in seat belts. Top speed with a tail wind 80Km. My second car was a 1954 Humber Super Snipe with bench seats. It weighed 1½ ton and had a 6" x 4" cruciform box chassis and 1/16" sheet steel panels. 1/8" chromed steel bumper bars bolted to the chassis. I dared any Jap machine to take me on 😀.

Then you'd be ignoring the bulk of dangerous drivers. So called experienced adult drivers have nothing to be proud of.

Fixed that for you :)

Other drivers seem to willfully ignore the L plates, I doubt that P plates would improve the situation. The number of times my daughter gets honked at because she is being a cautious driver is ridiculous (waiting for a decent gap, actually sticking to the speed limit). I think its partially to do with parents not removing the L Plate from their cars after the weekend lessons which creates a bit of a lackadaisical attitude towards them (which BTW is a ticketable offense), often I'll see L plates on the motorway with just 1 adult driver (and usually its a female / mother driving).
