So i installed an Apple Carplay and Android Auto head unit in the car to listen to music

It turns out navigation is on all the time as soon as you start Carplay/Android Auto.

It eats data, heats the phone up, and the battery goes flat.

What rubbish.

Anyone knows how to get around this navigation running in the background business?

Android or iOS in your specific case?

In Android, can you go into permissions and turn off ‘location’ in Android Auto?  Mind you if you do want to then use nav, the gps won’t be available. Or does the head unit actually change to a nav display? There are things about AA that annoy me, like automatically selecting do-not-disturb mode on my phone. And then not toggling it back to its original state afterwards.

Don’t know about iOS.

I don’t have this problem if apple or Google maps aren’t open on the iphone.
Just make sure to swipe them closed if they are.
Come to think of it I’ve never noticed this even when I do use navigation.

Just note - by restricting navigation you lose navigation. The idea of Android Auto / CarPlay is it gives you the common things at your fingertips.

It also sounds like you’re using wireless CarPlay on perhaps an older device.

The simple solution to your problem is to put your phone on charge while you’re driving. Other than this, I don’t actually think there is a proper solution than to not use Android Auto / CarPlay and resorting back to old school Bluetooth.

Lastly, the whole interface of Android Auto / CarPlay is fully driven off your phone. The great thing is this is always up to date. But it also takes quite a bit of processing. The heating up aspect is highly likely to be the interface itself and not maps if you’ve got an older phone. Also data use off maps is minimal as it is all cached - if you’re that concerned you can download local maps for your region in popular mapping apps like Google Maps and Apple Maps.

thanks.

do you know if sound files are sent to unit to process or sent as audio? i think (?imagining) music is better with android auto and worse with bluetooth - but not sure as i only did it once

Interesting thread - I always thought battery drain would be a problem with AA over WiFi.  I like AA with a wired connection - over a 45-50 minute commute, my phone gets a top-up charge which gets it through most of the day.  The 5 seconds needed to plug it in aren't a major problem

Yeah I guess that's the way to go.

Short trip wireless longer trip wired.

But I'm still annoyed the gps is on the moment it connects, plus the unknown data use.

The GPS isn’t the thing eating your battery - just understand this. Also data use is actually minimal. Like I say just use Google maps and download your local maps.

Sound is also streamed just like Bluetooth but over WiFi or USB. But if you don’t want the phone heating up / battery drain issue simply plug your phone in.

I’ve been using CarPlay for years both wired and wireless and prefer wired only because it keeps your phone charged at the same time.

But your complaint is about Android Auto / CarPlay as a whole really and this isn’t what I understand. Like I say, if you don’t want it then I don’t understand why you updated your head unit in the first place. You can always resort back to Bluetooth.

Lastly. What phones are you using here?

iphone 11 pro max and galaxy note 20 ultra.

i updated it to try it out.

it seems to be better than my previous bluetooth head unit, as there are more features.

ok let's say data use is minimal, and the battery "use" is probably the phone driving the android auto app.

haven't figured out apple carplay wireless as i need to find the car's vehicle speed sensor wire before it will do wireless!

With our Kia Sportage EX (2019) - short trips we use inbuilt wireless bluetooth for phone and Apple Music but mainly listen to the local radio and long trips plug in for Apple Music and Google maps and phone charge. We prefer Google maps over Apple maps as Google is just better. Haven't tried Waze ye

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

On my 11 pro max

Short trip's wireless

Long trips wired.

Wireless does suck the battery right quick.
