Some engine oil prices seem to have jumped hugely compared to the same product in Australia

For example: Penrite GFS 5W-30 5-Litres is $79.50 in NZ and NZ$49.90 in Australia. That is an approx +60% price difference.Seems far too much for the usual Covid, shipping, smaller market arguments.

Both have 25% off at the moment otherwise cost would be $106 here and NZ$65 there. Repco also has Mobil-1 for $110 as a price comparison and this is widely regarded as a really good oil.

I don't see why there is such a high price in NZ now as compared to a few months ago.

GFS is ILSAC 6A & API SP rated - luckily I still have two containers that I bought a few months ago on special at about $50 each (from memory).

Is Repco just ripping us off?

Same thing with Mighty Ape. Cheaper to buy some products from Mighty Ape AU and get it delivered to NZ.

Bit odd that the Penrite 7L is $72.75 at Repco NZ. Unless it's a completely different product?

Price-beating helps to lower the cost a bit too. Mobil-1 $99 at Allied Lubricants NZ - 10% pricebeat at Mitre 10 = $89.10

That 7L is the same product and they also have 20L for $196.50 on special.

My car takes 4.2L per oil/filter change so a 5L container is ideal. That 0.8L left is useful for top-ups if needed, or a special oil change treat for my lawnmower.

Plan A: I could buy the 20L and decant it into a 5L container but there is only so much mucking around I am willing to do.

Plan B: I can use other products such as Gulf Western SynX 4000 for $58 full price from Super Cheap, so there are choices.

The thing I liked about Penrite was that it has the latest standards, whereas the GW is the earlier (but still excellent) API SN & ILSAC GF5.

Probably go for Plan B unless Repco & Penrite drop their price of 5L.

In a moment of boredom I sent an email to Penrite Aus, so maybe I will get a reply sometime.
