Last WOF (about 3 months ago) i was told my top engine stay needed replacing among a few other little things , didnt think anything of it , told them to go ahead ........ move forward to today, when i notice a noise coming from the front right hand side of the vehicle at low speed , first i thought it was a stone stuck in the brakes or a maybe my front cv joint was on the way out , got underneath the car and inspected it , it looked fine , opened the bonnet to check if it all the fluids were topped up , looked good , then something caught my eye , it looks like the mount was cut and a nut welded in-between the two rubber bushes , what i cant figure is why the hell this was done in the first place. fyi car is a 2005 toyota harrier.

They charged you $112+gst + shipping for a broken part? Unless they did a patch (using a bolt) on the existing part and charged you for a new one?

I've got no idea really :)

it dosnt look new although its night time so cant take good photos/see well,will check in the morning , i think they either repaired the old part or got one that didn't fit (apprently theres a few different models of harrier) and altered it ,(very poor job). will i cause much damage driving it ?

Looks like they found a second hand mount which had the right ends, but the wrong overall length/angle, so they cut it & welded it.

It's a bit gash at the very least, and a potential for failure in the future as the joint hasn't been welded using best practices (decent sleeve at least).

I'd be going back to them and asking why they didn't at least seek your permission before taking this route if there wasn't any stock on hand of the correct part at the time.

I wouldn't be happy with that & would put the proper part in as soon as possible.

I'd put money on the original problem being flogged bushes in the mount. Any half competent mechanic would be able to source & replace these bushes for less than the overall cost of what you were charged.

oh it has failed , its sheared right off , i can move both bits individually with my hand , and thats whats causing the noise ..... ill see what they say tomorrow ... no doubt if i dont get a satisfactory result , i could complain to MOTA ? or some other organization ?

Was this work carried out by a reputable mechanic which is affiliated with the MTA? Or some random shop down an alleyway? (example only of course).

I'm guessing the latter purely from what's happened.

The MTA can provide a path to go down for disputes, and at the end of the day it's a consumer guarantees issue too. You paid for a service/product which has failed to serve its intended purpose.

If you search for toyota harrier engine mounts some look to have something attached to the rod between the bushes. It may be a SH part that's broken at a weld point but your garage may not have done any welding. See what they have to say.

update they fixed it , although they just welded it back together with a better sleeve , they apologized and fixed it under warranty. and were pretty pronto about it ..... only reason i go there to get work done is they have a friendly doggo there , but ill try another place for my car work next time .

Sure, but the original weld broke... no excuse for that. Putting a sleeve on it will help if the weld is weak but the strength is now in the (thin?) sleeve ... but frankly they cant weld worth a knob of...
