Bought a 2014 Honda Fit Hybrid - I have no idea what this middle button do (image from google but it's the same button - a car with a speaker on the front or something)

Tried looking everywhere on google and reading Honda manuals but can't seem to find the answer.

Any idea?

Does it have parking sensors on the front bumper?

If so, it could be a button to disable this feature.

I have a similar button. On by default makes a ufo noise outside passing cyclists.

Possibly an ambient noise option?  When moving in battery mode the car is silent, so some models have an artificial noise to alert pedestrians.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Turn it on and get close to some cyclists and see if they scatter. 😜

Yeah, as JaseNZ said, I'm pretty sure electric or hybrid cars in Japan need to have such a system there to warm pedestrians and cyclists.

Mystery solved!

But now I want to test it - can't find a volunteer in the house to walk in front of the car while I'm driving it.

I have a leaf it has a similar button. It makes a whirring sound at low speed, it’s not immediately obvious that it is a sound so that others can hear you but you certainly can tell the difference when you turn it off.

Start the car crawl along at creeping speed with the window down press the button and you should hear the noise stop

I looked online to see if I could find a valid reason for switching the sound off but the discussion degenerated into " the car has a horn why is the noise even necessary ". As if all drivers notice all targets.

It's the pedestrian warning system. The button is normally to disable the noise at night in your driveway or similar to not wake people. It will re-engage next time the car is switched on.

Is it a legal requirement in Japan with a specification?

There are few warning messages displayed in the Instrument Cluster related to that system.
One of those you can see in my video here:

So it's a leaf blower?
