https://at.govt.nz/about-us/have-your-say/proposed-speed-limit-changes-phase-three/#haveyoursay
Today is last day to opposes 30kmh speed limit
For those who do not realize: that gear box in many cars is designed to shift at 30kmh making it absolutely impossible to keep stable speed at 30kmh. Hence in countries around the world speed limit in urban areas are usually 40 or 50kmh
These clowns in AT found just another way to collect speed tickets fines.
Could we make it not happen?

We've had 30km/h speed limits in the Christchurch CBD for many years now and we seem to be able to cope. Are gear boxes different in Auckland?

You survive because the Police do little or no enforcement. A lot of 30 zones are too short for them to do so.

If you ever get a car with a limit function set it to 30 and see how many vehicles really do 30 rather than something closer to 40.

I often have Autopilot on at 30 in the city 😉 Most people are doing the speed limit

It's quite a large grid in the CBD that is 30.

You’re right, there is little to no enforcement of the 30kmh limit in Christchurch. Wish there was more. I use the limit setting on my car and everyone drives away from me.

As someone who lives quite near to the CBD. I've only see maybe 10 or so cars actually do 30km/h in the CBD. Everyone else does 50 and even higher in 50k zones. Everyone speeds in Christchurch, even Uber drivers do as well and their app literally tells them if they're speeding or not.

I've lived here for almost 2 years come August. Enforcement needs to happen. I'm not opposed to this at all but if we do it, it must be enforced.

I'd hazard that your Tesla-with-Autopilot also doesn't have different gears...

I agree that enforcement is negligible of the ones here in Wellington. People can probably pick a speed between 30 and 39 that works for them. Or 30 and 75...

Can't say that I've had trouble when trying to maintain 30, but I only really drive manuals.

No, a Tesla doesn't have gears and is very easy to keep at a speed (like any EV) but it's also not the only car I've had since the 30km/h CBD limits came into effect

I have a real problem with the blind dependence on speed changes as a safety measure.

I would like to know if they've actually determined the speed limit change would've made a difference in any of the fatal or serious injury accidents they're worried about... in my experience where speed is involved it's either well over the posted limit anyway, or would not be suitable for conditions regardless.

No they have just randomly decided with no objective evidence.

I forgot to mention: it is not about CBD, it is about 1600 roads in 113 suburbs in 20 local board areas.
Together with rates hike and taxes on certain vehicles for tradies these new money making tools will have a huge impact....
I guess a lot of Geeks working from home like myself won't get too many tickets, but some people certainly would....

This does actually happen. I can't remember the topic now, but someone OIAd the local council to get the data behind a decision, and it transpired that they didn't have any.

They did a study about this in one area and then changed the speed limit then repeated the study and found large drops in accidents and the results from those accidents. The issue i have is the second study was done in June 2020, when auckland was going through covid and traffic numbers were down by a large amount so i believe the results were flawed.

They also state a lot of roads are self regulating, so people tend to drive slower anyways, but this doesnt mean they need to reduce the speed.

In our area they are reducing EVERY road down to 30kph because of the one school thats here. when currently they have the time based speed signs down to 30 during pickup and drop off.

there is zero evidence there has been any pedestrian v car accidents in the 11 years ive lived here.

I think they are just doing stuff to say they have tried to do something. even through may not have any impact at all.

Surely the most basic controls for such a study would *have* to include traffic numbers, to make sure that the before & after were comparable and that the lower speed wasn't simply shifting traffic to other routes.
