Has anyone got one of these? I'm looking at the likes of the CarlinKit Mini 3 / CarlinKit 4 or similar. Seem to review OK and have one of the faster boot times.

They work pretty well. I've got the Android to CarPlay dongle in the Pajero and my wife has a customer box in her A4.

I don't have the one that adapts wired CarPlay to wireless but imagine it works pretty similarly.

I'd definitely buy them again, wireless CarPlay is great.

I have the CarLink 3.0 kit sitting on the shelf in the garage. I had it installed for less than 3 days before I pulled it out of me car and went back to wired CarPlay. It does exactly what it says it does but its not for me for two reasons.

  1. It does add some lag. Not much, but I hate lag and it was enough to annoy me. There's lag when you first fire the car up and getting your phone to connect, maybe 7-10secs and there's lag during use (delayed response to touch screen inputs and steering wheel commands).
  2. My car has a built in wireless charging pad in the centre console but it's next to useless. Not only is it difficult to place your phone in the exact location to activate the wireless charger, even when you do get it lined up it must be a 0.0001W charger or something. I would get to work and lose 8-10% battery on 1 hour trip even with it on the wireless charger.

So it's not for me. I keep meaning to list it here for sales but haven't got around to it yet. If you're Auckland based an want to give it a try you're welcome to try this before your buy.

I have Carlinkit 3.0 for my Mazda CX9. It works well especially after the firmware updates it’s had over the past 10 months or so. I would definitely buy it again.

Thanks for the review. I'm based in Dunedin - but if you do decide to sell I'd be interested, rather than importing.

We have the AAWireless. A lot of people have had good luck with them, but in my wifes 2016 A4 it's been a nightmare. All sorts of weird issues. I wouldn't buy another, but would consider another brand unit.

We contacted support but the hoops to try and jump through to get it working and the fact it would then break again not long after left my wife (and therefore me) frustrated.

Android Auto is a hot mess generally and wireless is worse. It was a big part of the reason I went back to iPhone.

Once I found a cable that worked with it, I bought about a dozen of them. I'm not going through that again.

Yep cable issues seem to be a big factor for Android Auto. I have found using a USB-A to USB-C adapter with a USB-C cable has worked best for me.

Any particular "USB-A to USB-C" adaptor you've found to be particularly reliable? I've still got a couple of USB-A to USB-C cables working just fine, but if I can get an adaptor I might hunt for USB-C cables that are a more suitable length.

That's an interesting opinion.  I don't know what is special about me, but my AAWireless and Android Auto in general is rock solid and performs equivalently to how CarPlay did for me.

I'd had a spare HP adaptor that came with a PC, so that's the one I have been using. I haven't tried any others, but this worked for me. I'm guessing most good quality adaptors with a good quality USB C cable would achieve the same result. My theory is that the USB C cables are made to a higher spec.

Interesting.  I've found the opposite.

I had iPhone for work and an Android personal phone.  I ran both for ~3 years.  I ended up ditching the apple and getting Android for work too.  This was mostly based on connection issues with the iPhone and car systems.  My SO has apple and it's regularly a problem to connect it carplay (wired or wireless).

The only vehicle I've had Android Auto connection problems with have been Hyundais.  I have no idea why.

I do have the occasional connection issue with android auto in my car, in the sense that it wont connect if I plug the phone in before the head unit started up. Thus I need to wait for the head unit to boot before I plug my phone in. doing it this way I have no more connection issues. I am looking at getting a wireless adaptor so would be interesting to see how it works with this.

I disagree with Handle9 and would expect the issues you're experiencing are not widespread.

My CX-5 is quite slow to connect with CarPlay, but it works (MZD Connect system). At worst I have to unplug and replug in the phone, then its stable. My Aftermarket Sony unit in my MX-5 is flawless, works quick first time everytime.
