I've used Trademe to both buy and sell.

It works, sometimes.

Recently sold a car, listed it on Trademe and Facebook. Got 1 person from facebook and 1 person from Trademe that came and looked. The Trademe person bought it. Facebook enquirers wanted to knock me down in price, bigly. Don't waste your time answering "is this item still available" messages on Facebook.

Trademe works. I listed mine when they had free car listings on one weekend, so cost me nothing as well. But also a sign in the window can work, depending on your councils bylaws.

The two cars I’ve sold in the last 14 months were listed on both TM and FB; while I got more queries via FB, the more serious interest came from TM and both were sold via TM queries. Similarly, I listed both during free listing periods so didn’t pay for it.

What I have done prior to my last sale is take it to the one area of town where private sales are allowed; I didn’t bother this time due to the lack of interest the previous time - in my city that may work for entry-level cars but just not the volume of people to make it worthwhile.

That reminds me - both sales were to people from outside my location, both who bought the car sight unseen, paying for the cars to be shipped a decent distance. Demonstrates that national coverage is worth it over relying on local sales.

I sell on Trademe.

I also hide a old cell phone with google tracking on in the car for test drivers, and some mates on standby for recovery if they don't come back. 🤬

Sold last car on FB.... listed it, within minutes had people asking about it, most lowballing it.

After an hour, one guy said that long as my description was true, that he'd take it that night - he put funds through 10mins later, and picked up the car at 5pm.

Al done and dusted.

So depends what sort of sale you want, quick and dirty, or want top dollar...

I always put myself in the car, I make for a good GPS and if I dont feel 100%, sit with the phone on an open call to a friend/wife.

I understand Turners can pay you cash for an old car and the price they offered me wasn't too bad, if one wants a quick way to get rid of their car. But I managed to sell for 3k more by selling through TM. A bit more work, but worth it to me.

I would go in the car with them, but I would also get their license details etc before hand, like they do at car dealerships. But I guess if one is selling an old cheap car, you maybe attracting a different type of car buyer.

Sold mine on TM (classified listing, not an auction). Took drivers license details for the buyer's test drive, i had a 'good vibe' so didn't ask for much more than that, we'd been back-and-forthing via mobile phone for a bit and it was only around $2K so... good trade, A+ would trade again.

If you keep an eye on Cheapies.nz you can often get a heads-up on the Free Listing days on Trademe. I imagine if you are selling a car you would save a fair bit. Of course FB Marketplace is free, but it comes with its own... challenges
