We are probably/potentially going to buy a new MG EV, and I'm keen to hear from other MG owners about their experiences. Some specific questions I have:

  • What ORCs were you charged and did they seem fair? The sales person we spoke to indicated they would be around $2500, but we didn't get clarification of what this includes.
  • Are you servicing your EV with an authorised MG dealership annually? We were told these services typically cost around $400 per year, which seems steep considering that EVs are meant to be much cheaper to service. But this also appears to be necessary to extend the warranty and to eligible for the roadside assistance service, so I assume they are charging a premium to cover the other costs.
  • We currently have AA membership, mostly for the roadside assistance which we have used a few times - I assume we can cancel this and replace it with the MG roadside assistance? Is the MG service roughly equivalent to what AA provides?
  • The MG iSmart service is free for the first 12 months, but I'm not sure how much it costs after that, or if we even need it? I haven't been able to figure out which of the car's functions rely on the iSmart subscription.

We're taking an MG4 Urban for a test drive tomorrow, so will get these questions answered by the sales person then, but would appreciate any insights from existing MG owners beforehand. Anything else we should be asking?

Thanks.

I have a 2022 MG ZS EV, facelift model which I brought brand spanking new from Gazley's in Wellington. On the whole, very happy with it. To address your questions:

  • OCR's were included as part of the purchase price when I purchased.
  • Yes, I have been servicing with them, as per the schedule, although my understanding is you can get the services done anywhere. The important part is the actual servicing, not the location. My last service was $488.50.
  • I don't have an AA membership and have never had to use roadside assistance (touch wood) so can't offer anything useful here.
  • Things must've changed since I purchased (or I've been lucky) as I still use MG iSmart and have never had to pay anything. I've heard of others paying $5/mth which I guess just covers the connection cost of the eSIM.

One thing I don't like is if you're using cruise control it disables regenerative braking which means you don't get energy recovery when coasting or going downhill. I also find the way cruise control slows the vehicle down on curves, even on moderate ones, to be too aggressive so it's a feature I don't tend to use. The traffic jam assist is nice feature but a bit slow to react when vehicles in front start moving away. I've had it panic brake a few times as well when it thinks there's going to be a collision, even though there's been nothing in front to collide with. Fortunately it's not resulted in me being hit from behind so far. It's happened maybe 4 or 5 times.

Thanks for that info! I'm a big fan of cruise control so will definitely try to test that out and see if anything has changed with regard to the regen braking.

For the servicing - the car advertises a 10-year warranty, but in the small print it says that you only get 7 years unless the car is serviced at an authorised dealer, which the salesperson confirmed when I asked him that. Similar small print with the roadside assistance - you need to have the car serviced at an MG dealer to qualify for roadside assistance.

When we got our gen1 ZS EV there were no ORCs, or it was hidden in the price, at the time (April 2022).
$2500 seems high unless they're including a heap of RUCs?

I thought MG changed from annual / 20k service intervals to 2-year / 40k? I know that's what my parent's have with their gen2 ZS EV.
So again $400 per year seems high/wrong.

Our last service at the MG dealer in Dunedin was about $250.

I agree, the ORC and the services seem high, but I'll find out more tomorrow. The servicing apparently includes a bunch of battery-related checks, but I don't know how far that goes towards justifying the price. I think the price of servicing is potentially justified by getting a 10-year warranty with roadside assistance, which I don't think any other EV manufacturer offers?

Edit to just note that the MG4 Urban is bundled with 3 years of free servicing, so it's not something we have to worry about until 2029.

It almost seems like it’s just something to keep dealers relevant.

My wife’s car is a GWM Ora and that has yearly servicing requirements via a dealer. Last service was $150 and I swear they did nothing and even when I questioned them they couldn’t tell me what they did. Compared to a Tesla that has no scheduled servicing requirements.

Far less goes wrong with EV’s, but this is something that I have against the dealer network.

Tesla warranty is max five years on the vehicle + eight years guarantee on 70%+ battery. MG provides ten year guarantee on 70%+ battery or 250,000km

MG4 here. 40k first service, 7 years warranty, RUCs not a problem IF you home charge at 6/7 kw/h overnight at a cheap rate -- still winning hands down financially. I have never charged at a charging station. I kept my AA membership because I trust them, always have. No problems with the car over 2.5 years. I shall use an MG place to get service when I need it and get a software update at the same time. I find the iSmart app very useful to check on charging, and sometimes unlocking and starting the heater. I think the MG4 is a fantastic car!

A wee tip here. If you're anything like me and drive a whole lot then Genesis can actually save you a tonne of money.

I get Chargenet charging at the home rate and often use it when I am away from home or even when my wife is using the single charger we have.

For comparison, I have an MG3 Hybrid+ (electric plus ICE for charging purposes).

ORC was included but listed separately as $971.76, so probably just Registration and WoF.

Last service lists about 21 points of "Check", "Inspect" and "Lubricate", as well as change of engine oil/new filter/air filter.  All up $290.00

Came with 10-year factory warranty, and the MG Roadside Assist, but dealer suggested that my current AA membership would probably be 'more useful' than trying to get hold of the MG service.

I looked at the iSmart features and decided that there wasn't anything of value for me to use it.

No RUC's, and a good 60% fuel savings over our last vehicle (Jeep Cherokee bought new 1998).

We must have heard the salesperson incorrectly, because he confirmed the ORCs are $1495 which includes 2000km RUCs, registration & paperwork, plus the accessories (mats and cable), and a light service to make sure the software is all up to date and everything is in order.

We ended up buying the car and expecting it to arrive mid-June.

@Amanzi ... congratulations, you'll enjoy the MG4 for sure.

We would have gone for full EV too if had off-street parking/garage to make re-charging easier and cheaper.

Driving the MG3 is akin to my previous sports cars, and certainly drives like one (this is our 3rd MG having previously owned a 1956 MGA and a late 1960's MGB, among many other vehicles).

We've driven a few EVs now, but super impressed with the MG - for such a "budget" car it really drives well, and has heaps of bells and whistles to play with.

Do you recall what your domestic unit rate is?

Has any one dealt with the MG service team yet - what are they like?
