We have a Pajero. We're empty nesters now, and I can't remember when we last used the 3rd-row seats. .

I could remove them (they're designed to be removable) and store them the attic above the garage. They weigh around 15kg, so that's some weight/fuel savings right there (I already remove the compressor and second battery).

The only problem is ... it gets hot above the garage. Steel roof, Marlborough summers etc. I'm worried what this might do to the leather/foam long term.

But it also gets really hot inside the car, and all the other seats are fine. So ... if I condition the leather wrap the seat it in an old woollen blanket and it should be fine?

Any advice welcome.

@MikeAqua ... from such experience with leather items in attic (clothes/jackets), be very careful because as you imply the heat will be damaging.

I suggest dropping a line to European Leather Care and asking for their advice ... they restored my dried-out leather flying jacket brilliantly, and offered maintenance advice.

I wouldn't risk it as you also need to consider rats and/or cockroaches finding something they like.

I store the 3rd row (also leather) from a 100 series Land Cruiser in the garage out of the way, wrapped loosely in big, see-through plastic bags. Pays to take them out and clean & inspect them, feed the leather every year or so if you want them tip-top.

Thanks. Roof space is rodent proof, but I'm not sure about roaches, which we do have in Blenheim. We're a bit short on garage space unfortunately.

Give them a darn good clean to reduce mould growth before you try it, give some thought to correct humidity in the bag, and be prepared to unbag and clean them once a year. I tend to think you'll get away with it. The objective might be protecting some kind of option for a future vehicle buyer rather than perfect condition forever.
