Hi

I've heard that due to emission control Japanese second hand car imports will face tighter control on 1 January 2012 and NZ imports will be reduced in numbers.

Will prices really go up? By a lot? I'm after a 2001-3 family wagon and was thinking of paying about 10k. Will this band be affected or is it just older cars which will see reduced supply of imports?

Above all - should I buy now?

Cheers

For $10k, you can get a newer wagon than 2001-3 :)
We paid $7k for our 04 wagon 2+ years ago.

Prices will go up slightly I guess but not by much, there will still be imports coming in, just not a huge selection like there is now.

As for buying now, do you NEED to buy now ? Is your current vehicle (if selling one) worth anything on the market ? If it is, then might as well sell it now and get a good price for it.

Good point - new car might cost more but I'll get more for my current one. We're after a Corrolla/Fielder/Passat. What do you get or 7k?

Hi there

I'm sure the prices will go up (they aren't all that low due to Tsunami etc anyway), but when and by how much is anyone's guess. As the prices rise on imports due to them being later model, it will push the price of older cars up as well as they become more sort after. There are currently thousands of Vehicles being imported at present due to the new emission standard coming in January. So I would say buying in the next 1-3 months would be a good idea, as the car yards fill up and need to move some stock. Normally the stock only has to be landed before 1st of January however this time around the stock has to be complied before the 1st of January meaning there will be a whole bunch of stock ready to go before xmas. Happy buying.

From 1 Jan 2012 you will not be able to import cars unless they comply with Japan 05 emissions standards ( which fairly much rules out anything anything pre 2005)

The age of your proposed car is likely to be the exact target of the new regulations,

Yes they will go up.
Due to the new laws, increased competition from international markets and reduced selection due to tsunamis there is far less cars for sale in Japan.

You can get later for for you money, or you can get a 2000-2003 for much less than 10k

We got an 04 Nissan Wingroad - they had a few wagons that had our interest, but the one we got was nicer looking ;) They ranged from 80k-110k. As mentioned before, this was about 2.5 years ago.
