gzt: It is a truly ironic fact that advertisers rely on consumers making irrational decisions. : )

But for the majority of these cases I think they will lose in nz law and $100 is more than fair. Ooth a court might be just as annoyed at the advertising and cost HN small but just enough to cause a lot more care to be taken in the future.

There is zero chance they would lose a court battle, but defending it would cost them something.

Agree and hear hear re your following post

There is NEVER zero chance of losing a court battle.  If any lawyer ever gives you that advice then find a better lawyer.

I dont think he mentioned his comment being from a lawyer
Thats why E+OE is such an old term, thats why there is a Contractual Mistakes Act, thats why its about the law taking a view of being reasonable, should a mistake happen. But this thread is mostly about emotiveness if someone makes a mistake, and taking advantage of it.

If they take this dispute to court, then those complaining will spend more in legal fees etc than what it would have cost to buy the items at full price anyway...
Take HN's offer and run.  It was a genuine mistake and you are trying to take advantage of it.  Get over it..

How would anyone in their right mind expect a company to uphold a 2000% discount?!

Sorry, this smacks of greed. Any discount of more than 50% is to viewed with suspicion, a 2000% discount is just a mistake.

You mean instead of you paying them for the item, they pay you 19x the original price for you to take it?

Pretty sure you can't have a 2000% discount.

a 100% discount would mean the price is zero.

Yeah well your maths or conception of maths is piss poor.

On $1000"
A 10% discount means they will pay $900
a 25% discount means they will pay $750
a 50% discount means they will pay $500
a 75% discount means they will pay $250
a 90% discount means they will pay $100
a 99% discount  means they will pay $10
a 100% discount means they will pay $0

Yep, your point's already been made by two earlier posts so no need to keep on sticking the knife in...

Oh dear, how sad, what a shame... Not really. Victory for common sense as far as I am concerned.

"In the Commission's view the advertisement of incorrect prices was a one-off, short term event that was unlikely to be repeated; the company did not financially gain from the conduct, nor did it cause harm to its competitors; and although consumers could not buy the products at the prices advertised, and may have been inconvenienced, there was unlikely to have been any direct financial loss to consumers."

Agreed, The fact this thread went on for so long was a real testament to how over-entitled Kiwi's are in general. People need a reality check.

I think that when places do this "it was a mistake" excuse, they should have to publish how it happened, and what steps they are taking to prevent it from happening in the future.

A real testament to how over-entitled SOME Kiwi's are in general. The vast majority of Kiwis would have the common sense to see how utterly stupid this whole fiasco was.

I can't say I'd agree with the word vast or majority, I'd say SOME are not overly entitled.
