tardtasticx: The magstrip is the silver thingy on the other side of the card to the chip :) so yup it has one. Thanks for posting will deff be doing this

Really? That's the magstrip. I always thought it didn't have one and the silver strip was just a nice background to the Airpoints words - haha

Yes, it is. Funny thing is when launched I asked Air NZ if these could be used on old EFTPOS terminals with no chip reader and they said "No, it can't". Then I asked how it could be used for withdrawals on ATMs that clearly don't have the chip reader and they went quiet...

I can't seem to find if you need to spend $300 NZD in one transaction to get the 50 airpoints, or if you can spend over multiple transactions?

I'm assuming I can just transfer $301 to the card via online banking, then use the card to buy items (e.g. groceries) for the next few weeks, until the $301 is used up?

That's what I've done, so hope it is right :)

Sweet! My daughter has a OneSmart card for a pending Germany trip, and she'll definitely be spending at least $300 while there. May have to load up mine too for some local shopping.

Noticed this the other day - just spent my $300 a few minutes ago. Going to funnel $300 through my wife's card too, pump the Shairpoints balance up a little further.

I've also just applied for the Air New Zealand American Express card - https://www.americanexpress.com/nz/content/airnz-base-credit-card/. There's no annual fee, and again, 50APD if you spend $300 within three months.

Disclaimer: Obviously this is a proper credit card, so if you have poor impulse control/money management then it might not be a good idea for you, but if you're restrained enough to order, spend $300, then cut it up and send it back it's a very good option.

Hope you know of some shops that accept AMEX :)

Last time I had one, Pak n Save and New World did, so easy points just from grocery purchases. Generally few stores do accept it tho

PlatinuM195: How are the fees with OneSmart? I had a look at the terms and conditions but they're vague about a lot of the details.

No fees for topping up/spending NZD (except maybe cash withdrawals)

http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/onesmart-fees

As far as the actual fees for foreign currency, the commission is built into their sell rates. The 3 free ATM withdrawals looks quite good (compared to Travel Card at least), think there are some other threads on here where people look into their exchange rates in more detail though.

This is what the Onesmart site says about fees:

Cardholder fee description Fee value More information

Monthly account fee $1.00 Deducted from your OneSmart Account monthly on the anniversary of the date you Activated.

Until 23 July 2013, this fee will only be charged if your NZD Currency Wallet has a positive balance.

From 23 July 2013, if there are insufficient funds in your NZD Currency Wallet to pay the fee, an Auto Wallet Transfer will be made. See section 4.2 of the OneSmart Account Terms and Conditions for further details.

So am I correct in interpreting this to say that if you have a balance on your card in any currency then I will be charged $1.00 per month, but if I have no money in any currency loaded then I won't be charged any fees?  It is confusion around the monthly charge that has always prevented me from activating the card...

Yeah that's right, so spend your $300 quickly and avoid the $1 fee :)

jnimmo: I like that you can see the items on the OneSmart account immediately when spending it, unlike my bank's credit cards. Annoying waiting sometimes up to 5 days for it to show on the account.
Just a shame they make you log in with username and password each time you open the iPhone app

Like a true geek, I have transaction alerts e-mailed to an account with a forwarding rule set up to send it to Boxcar which then appears as a push notification on both my phone and Pebble watch :)

So my watch shows a transaction with details, within about 30 seconds of it occurring.

The security question is weird, it says it is to "authorise this device", but contradicting that it asks for one at every login.

For those of you who have transferred money to your one smart (in order to spend $300), how long did the transfer take using online banking?

I'm with BNZ (who also issue these onesmart cards/accounts), so wondering if its instant?

What happens after the next month though when you have a $0 balance but it comes to taking the $1 monthly fee? And then the next month?

It's overnight.
