SepticSceptic: Interesting comment in NZ herald recently, in as much as Boxing Day sales, and New Years Sales are not that cracked up, and better to wait until after January as retailers need to move stock for the new year. Includes tech items, clothing, etc

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=11369700

I find for electronics the boxing day sales are good, but for other things, not so much. But they probably have a lot of loss leaders to get people though the door and limited quantities. But I think the sales have been better. Most of the so called sales that occur around the year are just price rotations.
Things like TVs though reduce in price when a newer model comes out, and the old one has it's price reduced.

These sometimes are good deals, but sometimes not.  I know that some items are still more expensive than Aus retail price (aka NZ tax).  I did get a decent price on a head unit for my car a while back though.

I am looking at buying a camera, and I went to another large electronics retailer with a cost + 7.5% card.  It still ended up being about 15% more than I could have bought it for in Australia.  Incidentally said item is now on sale in NZ for a good price, mainly due to the supplier offering a rebate to suppliers....

Been to a couple of these sales and always found them absolutely pointless. The discounts aren't much and are generally better during an actual sale.

Never shopped at mighty ape, and only shopped at pb tech once, but agree that you will find things cheaper if you use pricespy. I have found alphacity to be good in both service and their prices seem to beat most other people.

So who went to the 'sale'?

I went a few times last couple of years. I never end up buying anything.

I managed to go 5 minutes before they closed. My wife wanted a fitbit. The fitbit charge normal price was $178. I got it for $143.

I've been checking prices over the past 2 weeks and hadn't seen it below $178 anywhere.

Went down and got some vinyl records - overall around 25% discount of marked price. The guys was saying they were the one item that caused the 'feeding frenzy' for waiting folks lol.

Also got some Wii U games - approx $20 off full price.

kicking myself a bit as I got a Sonos sub 3 weeks ago for $1340 and today was $1207. Same price for the Sonos sound bar.

TVs didn't look much cheaper than normal!

When was that? Only seen it at $179 at Noel and PBTech over the past fortnight.
