IronH: Reading these bargain posts lately, there seems to be a fair amount of whinging going on.
People make mistakes - let it go. Also companies try to make profits, this isn't something new.
I can understand peoples frustration, but seriously, just because some here didn't get to rip JBHifi off on an obvious pricing error, doesn't make them a terrible company. personally, I think it reflects badly on the individual more than JBHifi.

People are complaining about how they handled it, not that there was an error. Sure companies can make the rare error as long as it isn't intentional and a trend. They however don't appear to have canceled the orders based on a 'pricing error', just a clause that allows them to cancel any order they don't want to if they don't want to furfill it. This means that even a product with a small price reduction could have the order canceled if they choose. They also didn't didn't even respond to customers questions about the error (to date), and they have two different versions of their terms and conditions on their website. The terms which people agreed to wasn't the one that contained the clause number which they canceled it under, and it is very important terms and conditions are all up to date and accurate, and there aren't different versions.

Hang on, who said it was a pricing error? jbhifi has not, they said a porting error.

so we really dont know what it was or what a porting error is (in jb hifi talk)

Exactly. If they had said it was a pricing error, then that would have been fair enough. But they used some weird explanation that was meaningless to anyone apart from someone who worked for their companies tech team.

richms: The frustration is that nz businesses make absurd markups and then throw these sales around all the time. It's like Briscoes. Don't other buying stuff unless it's half price.

When I can get a pair of headphones here from amazon and youshop for less than a half price sale at noel leeming you know that the normal price is more than twice what it should be.

Retail margins are not that high and they have to charge sufficient to cover overheads such as transport, power, rents, salaries, security, shrinkage, restocking, training, marketing..... To compare the difference between US purchased and local
you need to take into account transport to the wholesaler, wholesaler margin, duties and taxes.

Of course we could all purchase from overseas but will have to be prepared to pay higher taxes to fund much higher unemployment costs etc

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Talkiet: These "cost+x" sales are so dangerously close to fraud it's not funny. Their calculation of "cost" price is I am sure technically legal but would absolutely not represent what any reasonable person would think it was.

Try to forget how they come up with the price - if you like the price and you want/need the good, buy it - but don't think for a second they are not making a profit on each sale.

Cheers - N

Their cost is considered to be "Cost of sales" so basically staff, rent, power, etc.

Of course they are making a profit, that is how they stay in business, just like any other enterprise.

That is a pretty broad statement. Sure they have to cover those costs, but for many things, margins can be very high. Maybe not so much in electronics, but they tend to sell on quantity, and lots of competition. But in other industries, margins can be very healthy

It is impossible for the consumer to know what those costs are though. When another retailer was doing this same type of deal, when I was looking for a fridge,  it was still cheaper to wait for the retailer to have their 20% off all whiteware sale, which they do quite often anyway. I

Copying the information from the Australian JB Hifi website to the New Zealand one. Photos/Descriptions/ and incorrect price.

That is how I read it. But it it is copying information, how can all the info, except for the price be right? The Aussie customers are getting stuff that much cheaper than us are they?

I think there must be a reason why they didn't say it was a pricing mistake, and used the word 'porting', otherwise why didn't they just say it was a pricing mistake and human error?

mattwnz: People are complaining about how they handled it, not that there was an error.

I saw the sale, common sense indicated it was an obvious error. Anyone who ordered one took a punt hoping it wasn't to good to be true, turned out it was, I see no need for JBHifi to give anyone a heart felt apology, or even an explanation, because the reason is obvious. If someone can't work it out for themselves, well, good luck with life, you may struggle a bit.

There is a saying "if it's to good to be true, it probably is"
There is another saying “to every rule there is an exception—and an idiot ready to demonstrate it. Don't be the one!”

The majority of deals actually posted here are deals that look too good to be true, but 99% of the time they are legit and valid deals. eg A couple of examples include Tivos being sold off for $99 when they retailed for close to $1k, and HP Laser Printers where the cashback actually pays you to buy the printer.
Using your logic, you wouldn't take up any deals, because they look to good to be true, when that often is not the case. But the whole thing about deals, is that they often do look to good to be true, and they are often used to clear old or unpopular stock. And I think a small windows tablet I think falls into that category, and it wasn't that long ago when surface RTs were being sold off cheaply for about 1/3 the price they originally retailed at.
