Yeap, good for $99, but must only be a few instore left. Shows these small windows tablets are being sold very cheaply these days, maybe due to lack of apps for them.

They are cheap because they are cheap to manufacture

There are 16,000,000 different Win32 and .NET programs being run on Windows PCs every month, and this device can run most of them.

It installs fine - the tablet experience is pretty disjointed atm.

It would be good to know what you don't like about Tablet mode. I feel it's working well in the latest builds.

I have a stream8 with similar (same?) guts and it works pretty darn well all things considered, happily streams Netflix and HD movies, surfs the web and Office all without trouble

The only downfall in these things is a lack of easy video out option and combined microUSB charger/port, both easily rectified by Plugable Pro8 dock http://plugable.com/products/ud-pro8

I wouldn't personally recommend quad core with 1gb of ram generally, as it will be a little laggy, unless it was for a very basic function, like the OP, music player/controller idea. Although apparently this tablet, according to the thread is not as slow/laggy as one might expect.

The other issue with using a tablet that way will be battery life. With bluetooth and WIFI on, it will likely run out eventually even if its on a charger. With the bluetooth off, using a wired mouse and keyboard though, it may be able to run static - ie not run out, if its on a charger. You can get charging USB hubs that would be ideal for this.

7 inch might be a little small to use in desktop mode as well. I can only really just comfortably do it on an 8 inch.

You can also buy a USB computer for around $99 bucks, with 2gb of ram that would be better for the purpose (faster), or spend a little more and get a 2gb windows tablet with mini/micro HDMI.

Actually my website has such a device (I genuinely like it, its got a keyboard) but I am not sure if its against the rules for me to link it.

Plus you get 1000 student load for course related costs. Books etc rarely take up more than 2/3s. You could probably budget about $400 bucks of that towards a cheap machine.

TLDR: not really, its got no HDMI output.

Yes but I have those deals from the last stream 7 and a samsung tablet I bought. So if buying another doesn't add a year to my office then there is little point.

The dock costs more than the tablet. 132 NZD by my reckoning. It would make more sense to spend extra money and get a better tablet with HDMI out, I think.

There are quite a few universal docks around FYI. Some are roughly that price, some have more ports and are more expensive.

Ive done a bit of looking into docks. On balance I think I'd rather avoid a dock. The onboard graphics is always worse, most smaller tablets have USB 2.0, so squashing graphics, networking and other USB ports down there is a traffic jam, specially if you plugged in a hard drive.

Hooked up my my Surface RT to use as a desktop PC, and it worked ok. Although that had 2GB or RAM, also has video out, and office which doesn't require a subscription. But this HP one doesn't have the crippled RT operating system.

I was meaning native windows 8 apps. Sure, it would be capable of running many normal windows desktop applications too, but most would be a pain without a mouse, as they are not built for the touch screen interface.
