Delivery between the 3rd - 16th September... But that's okay.

Yikes its easy to impulse buy on Amazon, I only had to click "Add to Cart" and then "Confirm" and it's done.

Yikes... that really killed any chance of me impulse buying one.

No love for the Transcend? It's a slower but $20 cheaper. Shorter warranty too although since you're ordering from Amazon and Sandisk AFAIK don't have an NZ warranty depot (only an Australian one), I'm not sure it's that useful to have one past 3 years. And arrival time is 14 days.

Prices sure have come down in the past 12 months, what's the TBW rating on that Transcend one?

surfisup1000: 1tb drives at this price point a year from now?

nice

Will be pretty great - 1TB is already max for laptop spinning drives. If/when SSDs reach that/exceed that at a decent price point then no more spinning disk!

You can get 2TB 2.5" hard drives.

550 for the 512GB according to http://www.datarespons.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Product-Sheet_SSD370-SSD340-SSD320_V10.pdf

Edit: Sandisk seems to be >80TBW which I suspect either means they don't think TBW matters or they decided estimating for each is pointless. http://downloads.sandisk.com/downloads/qsg/extremepro-ssd-datasheet.pdf

Impulse buy with 20 seconds to go, I just hope MasterCard does not ping me with a real crap exchange rate.
comparing it to PB it will be about $200 cheaper.

10 Year warranty is exceptionally good.

cheers

Yeah, hence my purchase.

I've had 2 lots of Sandisk purchased in the US, replaced under warranty here, by opening a case, getting agreement to photograph faulty item broken next to a newspaper of the day and 10 days later (or less) new item arrived. I buy Samsung by preference, but Sandisk by close second choice when it comes to SSD (and first and only choice when it comes to SD memory)

A bit late but perhaps useful for future purposes.

I found http://www.anandtech.com/show/8792/transcend-ssd370-128gb-256gb-512gb-review quite useful when comparing the Sandisk and Transcend. It has both with decent looking tests so far better than trying to compare 2 random different reviews with different tests. Will need to check out a Sandisk review to check the feature set etc of course.

As mentioned, there's also the 3 years vs 10 years. Although not sure anything beyond 5 years or so means much unless Amazon or Sandisk get a local warranty depot. Even with the relatively light weight of the SSD, sending it to the US or perhaps Australia for warranty after around the 5 years is probably not going to be that worth it.

The 10 years may suggest a slightly better production quality but probably as much as anything they're willing to take a slightly higher warranty replacement cost/risk.

Don't follow the laptop or 2.5" market that well but AFAIK 1TB is the maximum used for laptops. The larger 2.5" ones are too thick to be considered suitable for most laptops and are aimed at the portable HD market. I'm pretty sure 2.5" drives are suffering the same problems as 3.5" ones, made even more accute by their relatively low capacity due to the small size and the competition with SSDs.

Areal density increases have slow down drasticly. Perhaps the 2.5" market is a little behind, but 3.5" have had 1TB platters for 3.75 years or so. IIRC, Seagate finally managed 1.25GB platters (for 3.5" drives) last year, and perhaps they can achieve 1.5TB, but PMR is basically reaching it's limits.

Helium allows more platters for 3.5" drives. They can be stacked closer together (amongst other things) so perhaps it will help on 2.5" drives too but so far no one's done it. I believe the max used for laptops is 9.5mm drives which fit 2 platters. But I'm not sure if you'll fit 3 platters in there even with helium, I believe the stacking is only about 30% closer. In a different market, may be manufacturers would accept 10.5mm or something drives, in the current market this seems unlikely.

From a quick search, it looks like Toshiba did recently launch a 750GB platter 2.5" drive in 3TB form. No 1.5TB 2 platter yet though, the fact they didn't is sort of telling IMO. Seagate is also promising 750GB platters. So it's possible a 1.5TB laptop suited hard disk will appear by years end which could delay things slightly.

As for alternatives, SMR vibration and block level write requirements mean it's currently only being targetted as specialised business markets such as some cloud storage services. Seems unlikely it'll ever work for laptops.

Other techs like HMR and BPM seem far more speculative. I'm not as pessimitic as some about hard drives. 1.5TB drives combined with pricing advantages presuming 750GB platter production can be rampled up fast enough may keep them in certain niche laptops for a while long. And there is a possibility the portable HD space will keep 2.5" around for long enough that something will come along, although even then it's likely to be a niche for laptops if it manages to revive then there.

Bit confused here, you mean they asked you to open the case to prove even if the SSD wasn't faulty, you'd destroyed it? Does opening up the SSD case really destroy it? I would have thought you'd need to damage components or something.

I had 2 SD Cards fail. Instead of shipping them back they agreed to allow me to photograph me having broken them and they sent replacements. After troubleshooting obviously.
