XM2s came out in October and hit ~$350 twice, in Feb and April.

Hopefully xm3's will do that same, unless they aren't going to do a new model afterwards which won't bring down the price like the xm3's did to the xm2's.

Or I could see how they're doing in Japan direct from Sony since i'll be going there in feb :)

Great thread! I actually popped out at lunch to purchase the XM3s for that price. My wife has the XM2s which we got for around $380 overseas and they were really good. Overall I think I prefer the look of 2s more. With the metal in the headband and the leather texture on the outer cups.

The XM2s were fantastic for travelling so I am looking forward to seeing how these go.

I just brought the wife a surface laptop so all out funds for a bit but i think i am going to sell my sennheiser 550s, buy the new m3s and then sell my Sony 1000x first gen headphones. I would still like confirmation if the call quality of someone can post a review when they get there's.

My experience of having been to Japan yearly over the last few years is that for most electronics you take the NZ price and add anything from 10 - 30% on to get the price in Japan. You don't get bargains there now.

I suppose I haven't been in nearly 3 years, although the headphones I was looking at were primarily JP companies (Audio Technica, Sony) and were $100 cheaper back then.

A lot of things seemed to be around the same price, better if you could get the 10% gst off with a foreign passport. Just need to avoid getting the receipt clipped into your passport :L

For 10% are you really prepare to give up the convenience of a local warranty, cga etc? A year from now you won't even remember what the difference you paid was.

For me, there needs to be at least a 25% saving to make it worth while. Obviously depends on the value.

For big value purchases sure. I was thinking more around 100-200 range.

Or specifically japanese products eg. kitchen knives. Mate brought back a really nice set for himself that he couldn't find in NZ.

For me it was the Audio Technica ATH-AD900x which are still $400 here whereas I got them for ￥17,000

Honestly I don't put much thought into CGA or warranty here unless its a very expensive purchase or a high likelihood of failing. Because there is no hard or fast law for warranty anything past the seemingly default 12 months is a toss up between spending effort to get a store to cover you or having to go to disputes.

If it's a 25% saving then you are still ahead if less than one out of four things you buy fails. You still get to unbox it and take it straight back to the shop you brought it from if it's got an obvious flaw or simple doesn't work. Most products fail immediately, the rest fail shortly after the NZ warranty ends. CGA doesn't help much as the retailers stick rigidly to their fixed warranty periods. Service is also crap in NZ so you have to deal with that. Personally I prefer to send things back to the states for returns rather than deal with local retailers. It's quicker and generally involves less dramas.

I am trying to hold myself back with these cans. I could go in and put a pair on laybuy. That would hold the price for me for three months (or until I pay it off). If a better special came up I could cancel the laybuy ($20 fee) and get the better deal.

Don't forget with Noels you can get a $10 off coupon for signing up to their spam mailing list so they are really $450.

I saw a you tube review on the call quality and it's still crap. That review (and others) stated that it's a likely signal processing bug so could be fixed in a future firmware update but thats still annoying. I will post the link to the you tube review when I am on a non work computer that can actually access you tube.

It's hard to find the perfect of headphones in this life. The other thing these cans are missing is bluetooth 5 which is a bit annoying given that it's late 2018.

I had to update the Headphones Connect App and then restart my phone as it kept reporting 10% headphone battery life.

I think the XM2 have a more premium look/feel with the metallic strap and leather cup covers, personal preference though, the XM3 is a more modern look.

The XM3 definitely feels more comfortable on my head - bigger ear cups and more padding on the head band.

The XM3 case has more little pockets for the cables which is great and looks less Bose on the outside which I like.

The XM3 still uses the NC/Ambient button for Google Assistant.

Jury is out on the noise cancelling and sound quality, I'm not in a position to test properly so I'll take the gurus word for it :-)

Overall, happy with the change (but of course I'm going to say that)
