@hairy1 I don’t mind people also asking 3D printing questions - it is fun to get into but there is heaps to learn. That is why I am turning a blind eye to it here as I’d rather people know what to get with their printer than have to do weeks of searches troubleshooting, getting frustrated and giving up. These tips helped me out.

@kiwifidget the 3D handheld spaghetti devices are not at all accurate - they’re more a toy than anything. With 3D printers you can basically go all out and design almost anything. For example I was even missing parts on my desk so 3D printed replacements.

I was hoping you would suggest that 😜

This weekend is shot to hell for me though, so in the next week or two.

Thanks.

I spotted this on cheapies today - https://www.cheapies.nz/node/25246 - its the network box from creality for USD 10 free shipping. So I have ordered one too for my printer from these guys. No idea if its any good or not, but if it saves me from using a pi to do it, then money saved there.

Any other new Ender 3 owners having issues getting the first layer of the print to adhere to the bed? So far I've tried adding hairspray which helps but isn't perfect. Any other ideas?

I have the glass bed sitting on my desk so next steps are to install that and see if its any better.

Once I get a decent enough first layer or two the rest of the print is very good.

I'm using glue stick on the glass bed. Works well. Sometimes too well. Have a bit of trouble getting it off sometimes

What temp is your bed?

When it sticks, does your first layer look nice and smooshed together or individual lines? If the latter, lower the gap a bit.

CHEP has some great resources if you're starting out, e.g.

Mine is working great. I have run the 3 demos thru which are slow but fantastic, and am just finishing the model for a headphone holder for my pegboard to run later today or tomorrow.

Stuff sticks to the magnetic bed like anything, I didnt get any glass, just that magnetic material which is wonderful compared to the glass in my old ultimaker.

For adhering to the bed first make sure that the bed is level and use the paper method to adjust clearance with the hotend / bed up to temperature (PLA+ - 215*C hotend, 60*C bed).

Regular hairspray won't work well - believe me, I've tried. Grab some Aqua Net from here: https://www.hairandmore.co.nz/products/aqua-net-pro-hairspray-extra-super-hold-unscented-312g

Spray a thin layer onto a heated bed. Print, and things should adhere well.

Also note on the product listing - they know their clients :)

@michaelmurfy What do you use to clean the bed to remove the hairspray?

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

Glue stick just washes off with cold water

I don't use anything to aid adhesion. So long as the bed is clean and set up right I get a decent first layer most times. A bit of isopropyl alcohol spray is great to keep it clean.

I had the removable magnetic bed for a year or so but managed to burn a couple of holes in it (my own negligence) and it had a few flat spots. I've since changed to the Creality tempered glass. For the magnetic bed, I found 50 deg was fine; I've upped it to 60 deg for tempered glass but other than that haven't changed my approach to printing.

I've since added a BL touch which is okay, but I find a bit finnicky and you do need to get down into Gcode to get the most out of it. I'd definitely recommend a glass bed upgrade, not entirely convinced I would do the BL touch again.

That said, I would highly highly recommend a feeler gauge to help you dial in your bed. *Soo* much better than a piece of paper and you can get them for less than $20: https://www.bunnings.co.nz/kincrome-gauge-feeler-32-blade-412092_p0227775
