DarrenJ: Ooh I need to get one for child starting intermediate school. I know nothing about Chromebooks - anyone got any thoughts on this model. School has said either Chromebook or MacBook. Not Windows , which is my knowledge area.

I wonder why they wouldn't want Windows?

Apparently Mac and Chrome are similar. I don't think they understand it themselves. :D 😀

Hi, spent a few years in this area so have a bit of an idea, if the school is currently preferring Mac's then its most likely a Apple school from way back. And being an intermediate and also promoting Chromebooks, is on GAFE (or Google Workspace for Education as its now know).

Front line support is the teaching staff, if they know apple then its easy, and as their daily platform is GAFE then Chromebooks are easy too. Now add a less known (to them) platform which to be honest is a messy complexity from where they come from.

I know those of you entrenched in the MS way of things for ever would disagree, but there is a parallel universe out there that does not include Windows, and they just dont have the time nor energy to deal with it.

End of the day, all they will be using is a Chrome web browser to use Google Workspace apps, so the Windows machine will be perfectly fine, but dont expect any sympathy from teaching staff to support it when some update or driver throws a spaz and your child is left without a functioning device for the rest of the day.

Cyril
